Default ® Riding Shotgun with FRANK KERN

Riding Shotgun with Frank Kern

From: Metronicity
Tuesday 29th September

Dear fellow Warrior,

Yes its true. I've been riding shotgun, as it were, with one of the world's most respected Internet Marketers and a brilliant copywriter - the $23 Million Man, Frank Kern. Let me explain -

I first came across Frank Kern a few years back. He was one of the first to start using video in his marketing. And it was a breath of fresh air from the usual style of internet marketing. There were no shots of red Ferraris or double-storied mansions. No big-chested bimbos sprawled over piles of cash. Mostly it was just pretty rough and ready footage of Frank and his buddies hanging out and talking about internet marketing. Very entertaining stuff. So I followed along and picked up a few things in the process.

Fast forward to this year when I took his advice and bought...or rather "trialled" a well-known Guru's new product - which turned out to be disastrous. So that soured me on Frank for awhile. I was still on his list and looked at his vids but he'd "gone off the boil" for me.

It was round about this time that I stumbled across a 2003 FTC judgement online about "Irwin F. Kern IV" and I was horrified. "This guys a crook!" was my reaction so I blogged about it. In fact I was pretty scathing in my posts. Here's the bit in the FTC judgement that got me het up -

Quote:
Instant Internet Empires, based in Macon, Georgia, touted the money-making potential of five pre-packaged Internet businesses, promising that buyers could make more than $115,000 a year using the product. For their $47.77 investment, consumers received the right to reproduce the defendants' Web site and the right to try to resell its contents to other consumers, according to the FTC. To achieve the promised $115,000 in earnings, consumers each would have to sell the product to 2400 additional consumers, who would each need to sell to 2400 additional consumers to achieve the same earnings, according to the FTC. By the third generation of the scheme, participants would need to make more than 13.8 billion sales, more than twice the earth's population, for each of them to achieve the advertised earnings.
I'm betting you'd be pretty horrified if you read that too. Well...maybe "horrified" isn't the right word but you sure as shootin' would be having a few second thoughts about Mr Kern wouldn't you?

Anyway. Turns out it was all a beat-up. Or rather a "sting". With Frank as the fall guy. So I find out later.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I'm beavering away at Frank Kern stories and slagging him off all over the net - I was convinced he was a villain after reading that FTC judgement. If You Google "Frank Kern FTC" I'm probably still #1. If you Google "Frank Kern con man" - there I am again. I was #3 on Google for "Frank Kern" (broad & exact search) and I'm still #1 for "Frank Kern FTC Bust" and #1 on Google for "Frank Kern Asshole" and #2 for "Frank Kern Conman" and #6 for "Frank Kern Con Artist" and #1 for "Irwin F. Kern IV". (But by the same token if you Google "Malcolm Lambe asshole" - there I am in poll position.)

So that's the background. Then last week I read Frank's version of the events that took place with the FTC. And it was so blatantly obvious that he was telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth that I immediately drafted an email and made a video and apologised to him. I told him I would amend all my posts so that it was clear I now thought him a straight-shooter.

He emails back -
Quote:
You're a damn fine writer, Mr. Lambe.

Thanks for writing me. I saw your blog and was like, "what the hell did I do to piss this guy off?"

I even searched our records wondering if you are a customer we dropped the ball on.

I have to admit, I'm an easy target. And if you saw me surf you'd have plenty more to write about! I'm terrible at it but I at least have good manners in the water.
And more. And damned if he doesn't offer me a gig. Even paid me up front for it. Frank - you're a gentleman and a scholar.

So there we are. That's my Frank Kern story. He seems to really like the sales letter I did for him. I like it too. I think he brought out the best in me. I asked him if it were OK to tell people I was working for him and again he replied -
Quote:
Sure dude, you can say you're doing stuff for me. No worries.
So here I am. Thrilled to have done a gig for Frank Kern. So thrilled in fact that I've lost the plot a bit. I don't want to work. I want to celebrate. I want to party like its nineteen ninety nine. And guess what? You're invited. Come party with me. Here - hold this drink - I just gotta pee in that pot-plant.

We interrupt this program to bring you a bit of light relief. Normal programming will resume in a minute.

Thank You for your patience. Now back to the program.

Yeah, let it be. Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna take the knife to my copy prices. See that four figure "Book rate"? Slash! Back to...lets see...what's a good figure? $2999 - nah - I'm worth it but it's still four figures. $1999? that's more like it but I bet it doesn't ring your bells, you bargain hunter you. I can dig it - I buy WSOs all the time. Too many. But when I see something that's obviously a big discount I go for it. How about $999? Would you go for that? Comes with the right to say "Yeah...I've got Frank Kern's guy working on my sales letter". LOL. Yeah that works. Its still a lot cheaper than what I just charged Frank. Uh hang on...Frank's a Warrior. Uh oh. What if he comes on here and snaps up the deal I've just offered you? Hmmm...we can't have that. So Frank. You can't take up this offer. I've something else in mind for you anyway.

Here's the deal - $999 for a ball-tearing salesletter. But only to the first 5 Warriors. After that I close this WSO and go back to what I normally charge - four figures. So I'll write you a smoking sales page for

$999

Hit that buy button! I'm on a roll. My terms - full freight up front.

But I reserve the right to pick and choose who I write for. And what I write. Don't give me Penis Enlargement gigs. Or "Turn your farts into gas" or whatever it is. Give me something decent. I'm not interested in writing for products I don't believe in.

Now let's have a fag, as we say downunder. Have a look at this old Camel cigarettes print ad from 1944 (Thanks to VintagePaperAds).

Over the jumps on Uncle Sam's "iron ponies"

They've Got What it Takes!

Isn't that a beauty. Look what the girl is saying -
Quote:
“I find Camels so mild and easy on my throat. And they're tops in flavor”.
Holy Moly. "Easy on the throat"?? You ever smoked an unfiltered Camel? Easy on the throat? Compared to what? Smoking an unfiltered French Gauloises maybe - those things will strip your throat bare and have you yelling “merde!” quick smart. BTW Ian Fleming's character James Bond smoked Gauloises. He could blow smoke-rings in the shape of “OO7”. Good party trick that. Anyway...I digress.

Trends in advertising have changed. Big time. But some things remain the same. Legendary direct-response copywriter Gary Halbert said -

Quote:
"When it comes to writing, people don't have time for your pathetic subtleties"
And

Quote:
"being on target is much more important than being facile with words"
In other words put your high-falutin' fancy words back in the sock-drawer with your unfinished novel. Just tell people what you have, tell them why their lives will be so much better if they buy it and tell them where to get it. But tell the right people – your targeted audience. Put the shotgun away and pick up the sniper rifle.

There's some copywriters around here that think it mandatory to spend two months or more on writing a sales letter and charging an arm and a leg for it. Not me. I bang them out pretty fast. For a reasonable rate. Who can afford to shell out $15,000 on a sales letter? That's madness. I don't care how much money the sucker brings in - that's a lot of money for a marketer to find. Don't you think? And I know even $999 can be a stretch. I can dig it. In fact I'll do a deal with you if you like - we can haggle over the copy fee and you can pay me a percentage of Gross Sales. Up to you. Personally I'd go for the flat $999. With a decent product it doesn't take long to recoup that.

By the way...I don't write to a formula. I think Frank Kern must have picked up on that. My copy "resonates" - it reads "believable" - well I hope it does. I write in plain simple language mostly, starting with a good yarn and then seguéing (segwaying) into a pitch. I'll have your customers reaching for their credit cards before they know what's hit them. Guaranteed. But there's no Silver Bullet in internet marketing and advertising. Some things work. Some things don't. You need to test, test and test again. Add a word. Drop a word. Change things around. Change your graphics. Or your font. Add video. Take away the video. There's no magic formula. And even if there were – too many campaigns run the same way can turn people right off. I think you know what I'm taking about.

So...as per the forum terms -

Quote:
"A Warrior Special Offer Means The Price You Give Must Be Better Than The Price The Public At Large Can Get. (This is not a "buy my product" forum, it is a "Special Offer" forum)”.
I'm charging five heroes just $999 for their sales page. Is it “better than the price the public at large can get”? You bet it is Pilgrim. Listen, you can imagine what I charged Frank Kern. (Let's just say it was in the four figures.) You are getting a substantial discount here. Not just a discount - a friggin' fire sale. But it's only for the first five Warriors. Then it's back to book rate.

Now where was I? Oh yeah. Testimonials. You want some? Here you go. And after that click on the Buy Button and go through to my verified PayPal Merchant Account “Miserable Productions” (I used to have an office on the site of Victor Hugo's mansion here in Paris) to pay and let's get started on your cash cow.

I was fortunate to get in fairly early on one of Mal's copywriting WSOs.

I threw over a half-finished copy of my product, and a vague outline of what I wanted.

Mal did the rest...ahead of schedule...and it's FANTASTIC!

What separates Mal from other copywriters I've used before is that he has a healthy disregard for conventional copywriting 'wisdom'...you won't find any formulaic BS in his work.

He writes for the READER. He has a wonderful, conversational style, which effortlessly pulls the reader from first word to last - in an off-the-cuff, soft sell kind of way.

I'm fully expecting Mal's copy to convert like crazy in my niche.

Here's the deal - before you break the rules, you gotta know the rules. It's plain obvious that Mal knows what he's doing.

Get on it before he starts charging his true worth, Warriors.

Oh...you may have noticed that Mal comes across in a no-nonsense...almost abrasive manner.

Pay no attention...he cares deeply about his reputation, and will do his utmost to help you out.

I know this for a fact.

Jump on this WSO. Now.

Mal just finished up a landing page for me. I hate writing copy but can sure tell when a page is doing its job. His pages are très sexy.

He figured out how to talk to my target market and made my copy compelling. He asked great questions to understand my product, my market and offered some advice that really got me to thinking and approach my product from a different angle.

Mal can be a bit "colorful" at times. So if you are super sensitive or super whiny, he may not be your guy.

If you want some kick-ass copy and good customer service without a bunch of bs - hire Mal.

OK Just went through it in detail. Bottom line – Fantastic Work!

I really appreciate the hard work and you nailed it pal!

If you have any adjustments or tweaks, let me know, but all in all, I am ecstatic with it.

Have a great evening and have a beer (a real beer that is, none of that french crap) and toast yourself on a great job.

I contacted Metronicity to give me a couple of tips regarding my WSO sales letter and headline and he took the time to tell me that my headline sucks big time.

He gave me a couple of tips, which I implemented, and my Conversion Rate jumped through the roof!
He's the real deal, or like we say here, he's 'The ****'.

He brings some fresh wind and he has mad skills. You should take advantage of his services as they're still ridiculously cheap.

Cheers,
mario (yellowboy)
Here's more testimonials. I actually gave this first guy his money back as I thought what he was writing himself was pretty good - not grammatically correct but it "resonated" and I didn't think I could improve on it.

Quote:
Malcolm,
I don't think i have EVER met anyone quite like you since I've been doing this internet lark...you're a REAL star. I sat back, looked at your copy and thought ok...its not bad...and i was about to email you back asking if you could have another go.

That was my fault for not giving you enough information...i find it hard to explain things see, simply because i expect everyone to know what I'm on about!

From what i have heard of you, and the fact you replied to me first offering another shot at it, and coming up with something that i didn't think of is well, true loyalty!

Guys, if you need a squeeze page doing, a salesletter...Any sort of copywriting, Malcolm is the guy. His out take on things is down to earth. YES, maybe he may get on your nerves...YES he may be a bit mad in his methodology, YES he can be very demanding, but tell him EXACTLY what you want, and he'll deliver.

Keep up the great work Malcolm you crazy Aussie!
Digitips
And another one -
Quote:
Mal's work was exceptional, and beyond my wildest expectations. His price is just plain crazy cheap. If you need some fire in your sales copy and offer, you would have to be mad as a hatter to pass on this arsonist's offer. Brilliant stuff. I'm glad I gobbled a bunch of them up. Money well spent. If I didn't know better I would think it was he, that Nero played the fiddle for while Rome burned.

Mal has a certain je ne sais quoi in his copywriting, that captures the reader's imagination, as all things must that involve quantities of beer, Paris and crazy Aussies, that have fled their homeland, for who knows what reasons.

Bob Silber.
And I'll get that Bob Silber later for the outrageous slur on my good character. But he did send me an email saying -

Quote:
"You have a gift my friend, a special talent. Damn good stuff. I love it."
BTW this is the Bob Silber, Attorney who advises Frank Kern, John Reese - all those guys.

Here's another -

Quote:
What can I say... Other than has Mal gone stark raving bonkers?

For this kind of quality you'd normally be looking at well over a grand... Because as we all know a good sales letter is an invaluable asset to your business.

George Montagu Brown Google Sniper

And I have a whole bunch of other testimonials I bought...I mean...that were volunteered by happy campers. PM me if you want them. And PM me for details on past work. Or to tell me you think I'm a dick or whatever. cheers, Mal

p.s. If you're reading this and are still sitting on the fence going "Geeze...I don't know about this guy" - I'll throw in concept and copy for your squeeze page. Here's mine - Killer Sales Video- Top Quality Custom Marketing Video, Promotional Video, Video Trailers, Video Tours, Video Testimonials

Yes mate. It's "sparrows fart" for me this morning. Vous aussi. I'm on fire. Copy anyone? I've two jobs to knock out but then pretty much a clean slate. Let's do it! Let's "craft" you some converting copy - Gary Halbert/Frank Kern style.

Just so it doesn't look like a friggin' ghost town in here, I'll give you an update. Two Warriors have taken me up on this offer. So now there are only 3 spots left at this price - comes with a free set of steak knives...uh...hang on...we've sold out of them too. No...comes with concept and copy for your Video squeeze page if you want it - did you see that in the p.s. above?

Both Warriors don't want it known that I'm about to do their copy. Which is a bit weird and doesn't help me much I suppose. But I gotta respect their wishes. BUT you can be sure I'll be linking to their pages once they go live. Voila.

Today I'm trying to knock out a long form sales letter page. 'Cause, you know, I sort of bignoted myself all over the shop that I could do it. Hopefully those guys will leave a comment once I've finished (and the van comes to take me away).

And yeah...the Kern thing is a trip. Hopefully he's not gonna tear me a new a**hole for capitalising on the break he gave me. I figure he hasn't seen this thread yet. Far as I know he's been in the surf every day this week. And I hate that. See ya. BTW I'm on Skype if you wanna talk. Just keep in mind I'm in Paris, France - 9 hours ahead of California.

Fun. Unexpected. Somehow, I think if I knew more about Hunter S. Thompson, Mal would somehow snuggle up in Thompson's category. I dunno. Must be those words like "abrasive", LOL.

Unfortunately, I'm not in the market for copy (although some of my clients are -- but they are in the market for my copy -- so far, LOL. Maybe that will change once they see yours, Mal, LOL.)

Does "damn fine writer" mean == "You seem to be enjoying yourself and having such a fine time, I want to join you? Sheesh, dude -- don't start the party without me!"

I told a copywriter friend of mine -- well, I'm going to modify the story -- "Everything you need to know about copy can be learned from the deli scene in 'When Harry Met Sally'."

Funny you should mention Hunter S. I met the man, briefly. In the Seventies. In Australia. In bizarre circumstances. I think I've blogged about it somewhere.
Thanks for your kind words. Yes I am having fun. Life's too short not to. Got your Skype call but as you can see we are in different time zones. And Hemingway was a writer - a damn fine one - and not a copy hack comme moi. Bisous from Paris - the city not the airhead.

Update: just found the Hunter S. yarn - http://tinyurl.com/y9fmlsw

Hey Mal --

Thanks for the video post - I had forgotten about that. Fits in perfectly with one of my products -- posted it to my blog (in my sig below).

Sent you a PM - take a look when you get a chance.

You guys still on the fence about hiring Mal --- He's the executioner of copy -- jump on it.

You take the cake for the RUDEST COMMENTER I've ever come across. And you're quite possibly in breach of WSO terms and conditions. They state - UPDATED: Anyone caught trying to purposefully harm another persons WSO will be removed from this forum permanently. If you bought the WSO you have a right to comment on it. However, if you have not bought it you have no right to say anything at all about it. You have no basis on which to even give an opinion one way or the other.

If you think someone is trying to harm your WSO on purpose just PM admin here in the forum.

Reported to Admin. Thanks.

OK, Mal This is my forth or fifth WSO with you. The other four were tremendous. They were all for my clients in my internet and offline marketing business and you've read their Raves about you. I keep telling them, he'll raise the price if you don't quite telling him how good he is.
C'est la vie.

So, I show your copy on this WSO to Melissa, and she knows who Frank is, never met him, but she likes his stuff. She also knows it's quite a coup to be writing for him.

She says, "We have to get Malie for our new e-commerce business site." And I say, "WSO, muuhahahaha we get him at a 90% discount." And she says, "I really like the copy on that WSO, something like that might work for us. And you know I'm a girl who likes a bargin."

So, you've been PayPal-ed.

Got to hook you two up on Skype so you can get the brief directly from her. She doesn't speak French, but she says she was in Australia
for a couple of weeks. You two can talk Kangaroo's or Koala bears or something.

Any way 'GRATZ on landing Frank, good stuff. I'm always totally confident you'll take care of my clients. I only work with the best and trust the best with my livelihood. So, here we go again.

Your pal,
Palo Coyote

As for the Kern bit. No, you didn't mention it at all - only just now in a PM. Do you seriously think I'd be claiming the above if it were a fairytale? Here on the Forum where Frank is a member? BTW it's not "worked" - it's "work", as in present tense. Did you not read this? -

Proof of what mate? And again - you need to read the WSO rules. Perhaps you'd like to rephrase your question as "Do you have any proof?" instead of your rude short comment.

You're welcome. Still reckon your photo would look better above-the-fold though. Kept the same size and put on the left of the copy. That way people get to look at your handsome face while they're reading your copy. And you'll increase conversions I bet. Worth a test no?

Ok, here's the thing with Mal. Only twice in my life have I got it wrong about somebody. The first was a guy at college who I didn't like the look of when I first met him, and then he went on to become one of my best ever friends, and the 2nd was Mal.

I had seen a couple of his comments before on the Warrior Forum and was quite taken back by some of his posts, but actually, I now know this because he shoots straight, he doesn't bulls**t you, and most importantly, he knows what he is talking about. He can walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

Well, after being recomended by a friend here on the forum, I started to approach him for some copy I needed doing, and his replies were so entertaining, I just knew he was the man for the job.

What then followed made me totally embarrassed about how I had judged people in the past by a few posts I might've read on this forum, because Mal is one of the most generous, knowledeable, helpful, and kind people I have met in a long time. He is doing stuff WAY beyond what I hired him for, and it makes me shuder when I think how different it could've been if I hadn't taken him up on his offer.

Mal, I want to THANK YOU personally for everything you have done, anybody wanting to hire you shouldn't give it a second thought, and if they don't listen to me, then listen to Frank Kern who hired you too.

Thanks again and see you on the next project, if you will have me.
Cheers,
Phil

Damn, I was just checking out what Malkie is offering and I s*it you not- this thread is so much fun, it made my day

Yeah, his style may not be the best if you're selling church supplies, but Malkie is an AWESOME copywriter and a great guy to work with. It's his style of copy that sets you apart from the crowd.

Peace out

Chris

We've pretty much finished the sales letter. Just waiting on a couple more video testimonials plus The Ultimate Belcher Button (with rollover and SFX). Have a look - Learn Heavy Metal Guitar

And Just to think when You first came to the WF (I was lurking then) you were selling your services for only $10...

These are inflationary times....

Good luck with the sale!

Ah yes. I remember it well. But it was only a "re-write of your landing page" and I did a ton of them. Just to get a few runs on the board.
