12 years ago I quit my job and never looked back. I waited until my business was making me almost a half million dollars per year before I took the leap. Why?

1. I was scared
My family and friends had me convinced that a good job and a steady paycheck was the way to live life. I was so caught up in this myth that I waited WAY too long to leave my “safe secure” job.

2. I didn’t have faith in myself
My business was in this new technology not many people knew about. It was called “the internet” and people thought it was a fad. To be fair I wasn’t too sure about it either. I knew how to build websites and I was making money but I was concerned that it wouldn’t last. I remember showing my father a stats page where I had made $20k in one week and he asked me if it was real and if the checks were clearing. He thought it was a video game.

3. I didn’t understand that jobs AND businesses offer no guarantees or security
I was stuck in the mindset that I needed to be safe before I quit a secure job. In the last 12 years I have learned that safety is a myth. I have dealt with many ups and downs in business, but I wouldn’t trade my worst day in business (lawsuits, audits you name it) for a single day working for someone else.

Let me tell you about Jay
Jay came to work for us as a salesperson in March this year. He wanted a salary and benefits and was shocked when I told him all my people start on 100% commission until they prove themselves. Jay was not impressed, and since he had a full time sales job working for a 2nd tier yellow pages type company he told me he was going to stick with his job. I refer to this as the safe, warm and dry mentality.

That’s when Jay got his wake up call. He went into work not 60 days later and was told his company was going bankrupt. He was to get no severance or compensation whatsoever. Clean out your desk and go home.

Jay quickly learned that he had put his faith in his bosses instead of himself. This is a lesson he won’t soon forget. You see the reality is his boss and his bosses boss saw the writing on the wall months before Jay. The employee is always the last to know a company is in trouble.

Jay called me up for that straight commission job I offered him. I put him onto cold calling offline companies because I wanted him to sweat it out at the bottom for a while. Since then Jay has brought me volumes of business and has made some nice commission checks.

Being in business for yourself is about freedom
People think it’s about money, and it is but only partly. You see when people ask me what I like best about owning my own business it’s freedom. The money, trips, parties, and other perks are great but nothing is better than my freedom. I never have to ask for a vacation, day off, or a raise. I make all these things happen on my own.

Let me tell you about Justin Popovic
I met Justin in December 2008. He lived in my small town and we found each other though various online businesses we had. Somehow we crossed paths. Justin was an unique individual. Justin worked for a blue chip company in the corporate time suck. He saw people around him who were “married” to the company and this bothered him because he didn’t see himself on this path. Many of his colleagues were divorced and they told him he would be too one day.

2. The Corporation
Most people thought it was safe to go work for a big corporation, or big bank. 10 years ago safe bets included Chrysler, AIG, Enron, Washington Mutual and Lehman Brothers. Go ask anyone who banked their retirement on these companies either as employees or shareholders.

Thanks for producing this Brad. Different models for making an income are all very well. But making the transition from long term employee to business owner is difficult. I'm a fan of Brad's stuff, and this is a mere 9 bucks, so why not.

I started online ventures in earnest about 8 months ago. I've had some success, and have a nice supplemental income, but not enough to live off of if I quit my full-time job.

For the last 8 months, I've spent most of my free time, weekends and vacations doing internet marketing. I can't keep it up forever, so I'm hoping this gives me a little perspective.
