No, the php, mysql, apache are not designed to be upgradable in this version as this keeps the software simple. However WordPress is upgradable to whatever the current version is. I am looking at adding upgradable server components in a later version if there is demand..

Having all that 'test' content in it has already made it worthwhile as I now understand (I think ) how to do menus and submenus, by tracing back where they are in the scheme of things and what they're called in WP.

I have a few questions which I'll try and sort out myself first, because my grey cells are going and it does take me longer now to grasp what was so easy a few years ago , so if I become a 'pain in the a**' with support calls just tell me!

Glad that it helped Dave - the dummy content is provided so that when you add a new theme, the theme will be fleshed out. It saves a bit of time adding posts and pages.

It also makes it easier to see what fit where. I suggest trying two completely different themes one after another and see how the handling of pages and posts works. This makes reverse engineering themes much easier.

Yes, absolutely. It should run fine on any windows machine from your USB key.

As for uploading the site - as Instant WordPress is effectively a mobile web server, it is the same as moving any WordPress site from one webserver to another.
The simplest way to move the plugins and the theme from the local Instant WordPress folders to the new server using FTP and take it from there.

You can move content by using the standard WordPress export/import tools or by exporting the database (Instant WordPress comes with PHPMyAdmin for this reason, but this is more advanced and not for everybody).

What do I have to do, so that start-firefox.exe is automatically
working instead of IE?

Yes, as your local machine is running the web server, it will be as slow or as fast as your machine is...

I'm moving to designing exclusively for Wordpress and just downloaded xampp to increase my productivity. Usually I just design in Dreamweaver, upload via Wordpress, and make necessary changes through Firebug. This entire process takes 3-4 hours per website just to test all of these items. The bulk of the time is moreso spent navigating through all of these windows/programs. I'm going to test this out to see which is more convenient...xampp or your tool which looks very intriguing!

I'm pretty sure I'll break down early, but do you mind telling me what your software offers over using xampp?

Yes, you can build the complete website offline.

The upload would be done in the standard WordPress way when moving any WordPress site between web servers. You would need to FTP up your plugins and theme as usual from your own machine to the live webserver and use the import/export functionality in WordPress to move any content you have.

Alternatively you could export and import at the MySQL database level using MyPHPAdmin (more technical, but more powerful).

The reason I am asking is can I save the database from this program and import it to a web server later if I load up hundreds of articles. Can I backup the database with this program so if I move my copy to another home computer I don't have to start over?

Yes, you could in theory do this as PHPMyAdmin is included. This will allow you to export the database as SQL which could be uploaded elsewhere.

You could also try the WordPress DB backup plugin (WordPress › WP-DB-Backup WordPress Plugins) which would do the same job.

You could also backup the Instant WordPress folder itself as security (weighs in about 150+ mb) if your local WordPress is valuable.

These would be easy to try and you can always delete and start again with Instant WordPress if you muck up. Don't forget you will need to remove the existing dummy content from Instant WordPress. I suggest the WordPress Suicide Plugin for deleting all content from a WordPress installation, but be VERY careful as this is a serious piece of destructive kit... (WordPress Suicide - Justinsomnia)

Yes, this will help Roman as you don't have to worry about hosting and FTP just to learn how the WordPress interface fits together, what plugins and themes do etc. You can just play with WordPress in the privacy of your own machine and make as much of a mess as you want

As you get more advanced, Instant WordPress becomes a platform for theme and plugin development also.
