A couple of page looks that you normally don't see in WordPress:

A Sales Page

It looks nothing like the site that it is on. The nav bar at the top was left intentionally, but could be easily turned off via the page editor. See also: The Sales Page Tutorial Sales Page.

An Opt In Page

It looks nothing like the site that it is on. The nav bar at the top was left intentionally, but could be easily turned off via the page editor.

Makes use of a custom display to have two columns and extra content at the bottom as well as the squeeze box which is placed into the right side.

A Home Page

This uses a side boxes custom display, which can be set to show any number of boxes on either side of the normal homepage post list.

It can also add a kicker above the post list and a footer below it.

A Category Archive Page / The Same Page With Side Boxes

There are additional content areas available which are not used, but this shows how a page can look when displayed in two different ways.

A Search Results Page / The same Page with Side Boxes

What is not shown here are the extra page sections that can be added in. You could have not only a title, but a subtitle, summary, and arbitrary content above the two columns as well as more arbitrary content before them and a footer.

A 404 Not Found Page

Why not give people some information when they are seeking something that is not on your site?

I have recently just got a copy of this theme and it really is one of the best Themes I have ever used,In fact it is the best theme I have used!

The thing I like best is the ability to set up my blog,to the style I want.

I can place adsense into my Post & Pages very easily,I can also have a static option on my frontpage and then have my post underneath it,or a static option below my posts.

The options are endless and with more updates to follow,I really can't see me ever using another wordpress theme again.

I am using this theme now on all of my blogs.

Yep. I don't buy into licenses and such.

If you buy something from me, it is yours to do with as you please.

So:

The only note on that last bit is that free updates ( new versions, custom displays, quicksets, etc. ) are only available to those that get a copy from me.

Pretty much anything that executes client side or works with normal html can be used in the various box areas. I've used it with youtube and a few other video sites without any problems.

Yes. As of version 1.6 you can easily add flash headers, videos, and anything else that doesn't require php to the site header.

I don't see why not.
If you stick to using pages and disable the post lists you will be left with about 5 horizontal content areas on the major template pages and single pages will display normally.
If you could provide an example of what you are thinking I could give a better answer to this question though.

Currently, there are 6 content areas per default page template ( home, search, 404, single page, single post, archives, etc. ):

• The page level kicker
• The page level byline
• The page level summary
• The page level above content html area
• The page level below content html area
• The page level footer

Additionally, post lists can also have a kicker, byline, and footer.

There are also three custom content bars that can be used in the header, a content area in the header logo bar which can be used if wanted, and content areas above each side bar, which can be merged into a single larger content area.

As of 1.6, the theme also has the ability to mix an arbitrary number of content areas in with the post list on multi page templates ( home, search, and the different archives ).

With custom displays, you can also create an arbitrary number of content areas on different page types, typically to the side of post lists.

So far, most issues people have had were simply due to unfamiliarity with the multitude of option menus.

Upcoming Features:
Here are the features that I am currently working on implementing:

• More content areas, particularly in the header area and above and below the sidebars.
• XML Site Map generation
• A Popup CSS style editor for easy setting of styles without having to remember the multitude of style attributes available.
• Newsletter replacement functionality
• An intelligent, configurable caching system

While I am moving across the country to Virginia in one weeks time, I am looking to have the above functionality done and fully tested within one month.

Upcoming Custom Displays:
I am still deciding on what kind of custom displays to create next...so if you want pages with particular types of layouts and you pick up this theme...let me know and maybe I will create those next.

I plan to put up at least one new custom display set per month, provided I can come up with interesting layouts that people actually want.

Styling the theme...

I've had a few people ask about styling this theme...so I will put a video or two together on that subject and post it here shortly.

You can style pretty much everything within it, using graphics or not if you see fit.

The main thing to consider when doing so is that if you are using a fluid layout you will want to be sure to properly position background images so that they still look right when people are using smaller or larger displays...but I'll cover that in the upcoming videos.

Well...it has been quite some time since I have used Blogger, but unless things have changed drastically, it is still managed by a third party.

Personally, I don't like relying on other peoples decisions for my sites...and that is more than enough reason in my book to run your own site with WordPress.

However, after I put out the styling videos I will take a look at Blogger and see what the current pros/cons are from where I stand.

By default, WordPress works very well as a blog and you can literally customize anything you want...if you know the php and wordpress hooks to do so.

With Privateer, I am attempting to create a solution for those unfamiliar with php and css that will enable them to quickly be able to get a site that looks however they want without having to either learn php and css or hire someone who does.

For example, most themes have a particular layout, which is pretty much take it or leave it. If you like everything but the sidebar placement...then you need to figure out how to move the sidebars around in code without breaking things. With the Privateer theme, you can simply go into the admin menu ( Privateer - HTML Entities - Sidebars ) and choose to move the sidebar to whichever side you want and have it done immediately without digging into the code.

Another interesting aspect of the Privateer, which most other themes I have used lack is that the pages ( Home page, Search results page, 404 page, archive pages, page and post pages, etc. ) are full pages in their own right, which you can set titles, subtitles, and custom content for. You can even hide the list of posts if you are inclined to do so.

From there, you can add kickers, bylines, subtitles, and summaries to your actual wordpress posts and pages, which will be displayed within the post list of each page.

Finally, for even further flexibility, you can use custom displays to add new content areas on different pages...which most people cannot do very well without creating / finding custom templates or paying to have them made.

I've taken pains to try and make sure that almost everything can be styled via the admin menu.

Right now, to get full use out of the Privateer, one does need to know some CSS ( to style the various areas ), but that will be remedied as well in the near future once I have completed the CSS style editor so that each css area in the admin menu has an edit button which brings up a panel to set applicable styles with.

For those completely new to wordpress, especially those unfamiliar with css, html, and php, the Privateer primarily brings the following to the table:

• A logical breakdown of the page types with options for them inside of the privateer menu. ( see the admin menu video above )
• An easy way to get a good variety of looks for your site header.
• An easy way to get the exact sidebar placements you want.
• An easy way to get a variety of different layouts through the custom page content areas, post content areas, and custom displays.

With this theme, if you know the following css styling commands you can get an endless variety of looks:

• background:
• margin:
• padding:
• border:
• font:

And I aim to make it so that even those with no real knowledge of css can set things up nicely here within a month via:

• A custom css editor that provides options based upon the type of thing being edited.
• Built in html editors for the various areas that accept html.

Anywise, off to finish those videos and I'll do my best to check out blogger tonight or tomorrow and give my thoughts on the two.

For someone who just wants a very simple blog layout and doesn't really care about how it looks or how things are placed, the Privateer / WordPress is probably overkill. But for those that don't have the time and/or want to learn php+css+html and do want to tweak things, I believe it is a bargain for the price.

I always have difficulty with the logic of this assertion (which we certainly see here quite often).

If you can self host blogger, then that point is moot. Of course, when I first started blogging I found that I preferred WordPress...but both have come a long way since those days...so I could not, at this point, note why one would use one over the other.

This theme started out as a series of Atahualpa 3.2 hacks, so it includes most of the functionality of Atahualpa 3.2 as well as some of the features of 3.4 which I liked.

Features in 3.2 that are not in the Privateer:

• I removed the built in widgets as they felt too slow.

Features in 3.2 that have been changed in the Privateer:

• Almost everything has been rewritten with php classes.
• The menu system has been completely reworked to be ( I think ) a bit clearer on what is where.
• Options that had to do with post and/or page level functionality have been moved out of the general option table and placed in template and post/page object tables for clarity and speed of database usage.
• The built in SEO functionality has been heavily altered and tweaked to add most of the features that I like from other SEO plugins.

Features from Atahualpa 3.4 which were added to the Privateer ( different code, same general functionality ):

• CSS and Javascript can be served directly and/or compressed.
• Page and Post objects can have subtitles, individual meta robots settings, and summaries set.

Features added to the Privateer theme:

• Rewritten code with custom database structures for faster processing and less database/system overhead.
• The wordpress templates have been restructured to each have template level data ( kicker, title, byline, subtitle, summary, two extra content areas, a post list, and a footer )
• The wordpress objects ( posts and pages ) have template level kickers, bylines, and footers in addition to their own thumbnails, subtitles, and summaries.
• The options for template and object level items are within their own menus ( Home Page, Single Page, Single Post, 404 Not Found, Search, etc. )
• Each template type can have custom displays with their own admin menus ( and for post and page objects you can specify the display you want to use on an item by item basis )
• Quicksets, which are basically saved database options that allow you to change the entire look of your site with a couple of clicks instead of going through and tweaking all of the individual options.
• More SEO options, primarily covering the functionality of Gregs High Powered SEO and some of what Platinum SEO does...more coming in the near future.
• You can choose which tags to use for titles, subtitles, and summaries at both the page and post level and style them to get the look and feel you want...but the defaults are those I think are sanest from an seo standpoing ( H1 for page and post titles, H2 for template level page titles, H2 for the site headline, etc ).

The main things I kept from Atahualpa are:

• The display layouts ( fluid and/or fixed width capabilities )
• The header section ( adding two content bars shortly as well )
• The sidebar layouts ( added overrides so one can easily choose to use the atahualpa style list bullets or normal/custom ones )

My focus right now is to add a few extra features that I want for my own sites, add any extra functionality that users request, and continue to make the option management pieces easier.

I haven't kept up with the newer Atahualpa versions as I really didn't like the way he was going with it from a codebase standpoint.

I had documentation together at one point...but it is horribly outdated!

If you could give me a specific plugin, I could say for sure one way or the other...but I've yet to run into a plugin that I've had problems using with the theme as it has all the proper tags for plugin useage within it.

And if the plugin uses tags ( such as [datareader:option:option] ) then you could embed those into the posts and post level items without problems...and depending on the plugin anywhere else as well.

For the headers, it sounds like with this version you might need to copy the header.php file and then replace the function call that writes the site header to the page with the code for your own header...then select that as the wordpress header for the different template types.

In the next version you will be able to simply enter your custom header into the %content1 or %content2 bars and set the header to use just your content bar. From what people are requesting, I am thinking I should hurry up and add those header bars and a few other things and put up a minor version as they really are easy things to add...I was just going to wait to make them available until I get a couple of the more complex pieces added ( the css editor and intelligent caching system for example ).

If you could show me what you were looking for as far as the header goes, I could be more sure of it...and even build you a drop in alternate header file to select in the template menus as it sounds like a simple thing from a code standpoint...but something that this version might not be able to do via just the menu option panels.

Definitely let me know once you have had a chance to use it about any problems you encounter, questions you have, and/or functionality that you would like to see implemented...whether it be plugin functionality, content areas, new custom displays, etc.

Once I am situated and stable in Virginia I'll be starting in on the next updates...and I am still looking for user feedback concerning any new types of custom displays that might be wanted. If I don't get any I'll just choose from those I am currently considering and get them out within a couple of weeks.

And for those that have purchased a copy, here are some things to think about that I'd be more than happy to implement upon request:

• Have a plugin that outputs some kind of content and want it to be able to be displayed within kickers, footers, and bylines? ( see the sociable plugin displayed on my site for an example ) Just let me know and, if it uses tags to do the output I can work them in easily for you...and I'll send you the updated file in addition to including the changes in the next version.
• Have a particular page look that the Privateer them cannot manage? Send me examples of such pages and I'll either show you how to set them up or create a new custom display that will let such pages be setup as soon as I have time to do so.
• Is there particular seo functionality that you would like to see in addition to that already included? Just let me know and I'll consider adding it...and if I do I'll give you the updated file and include it in the next version.
• Are there any plugins you are using that have tags but default to using hooks to rewrite content on the fly...which are slowing things down? As time permits I would be happy to use the tags provided to integrate them at the code level for much faster processing times.

With this theme, you aren't just getting a theme...you are getting a programmer who stands behind it and is willing to add the functionality you are looking for as time permits.

For big projects / additions I might decline or see if we can work some kind of arrangement out...but for most smaller things I'll be more than happy to add them to my growing to do list and get them implemented as I can.

Sure do!

My main site uses it at Privateer Web Solutions.
Another site using it is Paddle On Kayaking.

No fancy graphics as of yet, but it is pretty simple to set them up if you are familiar with css. The next version ( hopefully up within a week...and free to anyone who picks up a copy ) will have a css editor to make it easy for people who aren't too familiar with css to quickly and easily tweak styles for items that accept them.

And I'm all moved and settled in Virginia now so progress will resume and I'll be available for questions.

I used to be a subscriber to this service.The trouble is there will be 1000s of like minded people all trying to get backlinks from the same sites. All too often the website simply rejected my attempts to leave backlinks seeing it as spam so i ended up getting nowhere. Version 1.5 is now complete and tested.

New functionality is intended to make the creation of sales pages fairly quick and simple. Some items of interest:

• Set up default looks for sales title text, product boxes, bonus boxes, act now boxes, testimonial boxes, squeeze boxes, opt in boxes, guarantee boxes, and order boxes.
• Hide or customize the site header, site footer, title style, and background styles on a page by page and post by post basis.
• Override the default sales box looks on an individual post and page basis
• Hide specified sections of the site on an individual post and page basis, no matter whether they would be displayed or not on that type of page.
• Change the favicon for specific posts and pages

Combine this functionality with quick sets and custom display sets and you end up with the ability to create a lot of different looks for your sales pages without much hassle.

Oh...and once you have set up one sales post or page, you can enter the ID for it into a different post or page to have all settings copied from your finished page. This provides the ability to quickly setup sales pages that have looks similar to those which you have already set up.

Finally, I'm including my simple html and css guide as well as a sales box quick sheet ( to have the codes handy ) and an html entities post content page ( to create a post or page draft with the content in it for use in styling your html entities.

Anywise, I'll update the sales copy in a little while. Time to go dig some ditches for a friend.

Another note about licensing:

If you are using the Privateer Theme to create sites for other people, they should only pick up their own copy if they want to have access to the owners forum and to get version updates for themselves.

If you are going to be maintaining the sites for them, then you can simply provide the extra content to your clients that you get from me.

Of course, if you do such things and want to use the Privateer ( and have your clients get upgrades and extra content automatically ), drop me a line and we can most likely work out a mutually beneficial arrangement of some type.

Hopefully that is a bit clearer. The short version:

• Clients only need copies of the theme if they want to have direct access to updates and extra content themselves.
• You can get updates from me and provide them to your clients without your clients every buying a copy of the theme.

I'm doing autoblogs and I like the look of magazine style themes but they are bad for autoblogging as I would need to manually put into each post a thumbnail and that's not autoblogging anymore. I found this plugin that's suppose to automate the thumbnail making if there is an image present.

1. Can your theme do magazine style?

2. If you look at the document for the abovementioned plugin, where in your theme set should I put the hook for automatically grabbing the image that's in the article to set as the thumbnail for the magazine box?

The plugin's called "get-the-image"

The plugin should work just fine, but will ( currently ) require editing multiple files as the privateer uses multiple templates. I can definitely help you get that set up though.

Come next version (1.6), I'll be sharing new functionality ( already in and tested...just waiting for a few me to finish 1.6 ) that will allow such plugins to be given shortcodes by editing a single file...which you can then use anywhere you want to place the plugins output.

1) The ability to easily support plugins that require html editing and create shortcodes for them.

2) The ability to display posts in a specified number of columns ( preview here ) with content areas mixed in.

3) The ability to choose your post layout, moving the thumbnail to different places or even using only the thumbnail. ( handy for movie, song, and review sites using multiple column post lists )
