Default WordPress Theme - The Privateer v1.3 - A Flexible Feature Rich Theme

Pick up The Privateer Theme Today!

Curious? Check out the manual before you buy!

What is The Privateer?

The Privateer is a WordPress Theme ( which requires WordPress v 2.7+ ) which I built initially to address some of the problems that I have with WordPress.

Over time, I have added functionality for the people whom I help to setup web sites and worked to address their issues and needs.

What does the Privateer bring to WordPress users?

Separation of Posts and Pages

Normally, WordPress is based around page and post objects, which are from a database standpoint the same thing...their only differences being the functionality supported for each. This can cause confusion with users, especially when talking about things such as page pages and post pages.

In The Privateer, I have split these out so that the primary templates are actually pages in their own right and contain the wordpress page and post objects within them.

See the Template Configuration page on my site ( and the child pages for it ) as well as the below video if this kind of functionality interests you.

Some of the things you can do with this theme that most themes cannot do:
  • Add kickers, titles, bylines, subtitles, summaries, and extra content above the displayed post and page objects on a template level basis.
  • Add extra content and footers below the displayed post and page objects on a template level basis
For example, you could:
  • Add a static area to your home page, search results page, tag archives, single page displays, and even your 404 page. This is a great way to have a real home page that also displays your most recent posts below it and/or place adsense blocks, banners, and/or widgets on individual page types.
  • Combine this with custom displays to get very interesting results where you can have content blocks above, to the side of, and below the normal content on the various page types. ( see below for information on custom displays )
  • Add certain plugin results to headers, bylines, and footers with tags such as %wp-print%, %sociable%, etc. ( see my site for an example as I use sociable within page and post bylines )
Custom Displays

Custom displays are effectively built in templates for different page types which have options to be configured in the WordPress admin panel as well as options which are individual to each post and/or page.

The multi and no page templates ( Home, Search Results, Archives, and 404 ) have a range of options for each custom display which can be set via their own admin menus.

The page and post templates ( Single Page and Single Post ) have options within the admin menus as well as options within the editor so that you can set up a number of things on a page by page or post by post basis.

The current display set places content boxes and/or lists of posts from a specified category to the side of or below the main content area of the page.

See the Custom Display page on my site or the below video for a more in depth explanation of this functionality.

Flexible Sidebars and Layout

In The Privateer Theme, there are currently two sidebars which are fairly flexible. You can:
  • Place them on either side of the page
  • Style them individually
  • Set their widths
  • Hide one or both on different template types ( e.g. Home, Search, etc. ) to give yourself more room for content.
  • Hide one or both on specific page templates and/or category types.
For more information on this functionality, see my Getting Started Page and/or watch the below video:

Quick Sets

Quick sets are like database backups, but for the theme settings.

You can choose to create them with only the style information or with all information.

These are very handy for:
  • Saving changes before you start making modifications to the look of your site.
  • Quickly creating new sites using a look that you have already saved as a quickset.
  • Sharing the look of your site out with others.
  • Playing with the look of your site on a local system and then updating your live site with a quickset.
You can create them, get them from other people and apply them, and use them to simply create what are basically restore points.

See my Quick Sets page or watch the below video for more information on quicksets:

Search Engine Optimization

The Privateer does have search engine optimization built in, though not all of the bells and whistles of some of the better plugins are yet available.

Basically, it breaks down as follows at this time:
  • Template level seo options ( meta title, meta desc, meta keywords, yahoo directory, open directory, and canonical settings )
  • The ability to automatically include tags, categories, titles, and subtitles in your meta keywords and/or add your own manually.
  • Page and Post level control of the meta tags
  • The ability to specify what kind of tags you want used for titles, subtitles, and summaries and style them...so that you can easily have H1 titles which are not huge.
I do plan to add various no-follow options and a couple of other things, but the above is most of what is currently there.

See the below video for a rundown of the above and a couple of other seo related options:

In Depth Admin Menus

The Privateer has a lot of options and I have made some effort to create logical admin menus that do not take too much time to become familiar with.

Currently, the menus break down as follows:
  • The Manual Menu ( general information )
  • The Global Settings Menu ( for account and sitewide settings )
  • The General Display Menu ( for styling and setting up the general look of the site )
  • The HTML Entities Menu ( for styling and setting up the different types of html entities as well as the sidebars and widgets )
  • The Default Page and Archive Page Menus ( for styling page, navigation, and post level items on all of your pages or just the archive pages )
  • The Template Page Menus ( Home Page, Single Page, Single Post, etc ) for configuring what should be displayed on each template at the page, navigation bar, and post level as well as creating extra styling to override the defaults you have set in the default page or archive page menu.
There is a lot to it...and it can take a bit of time to get familiar with it all, but two things can help with that quite a bit:
  1. Quicksets can be used to change hundreds of options at once.
  2. The below video quickly goes over the menus
Menu Overview Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6H_THwRujI

Additionally, I am in the process of adding more videos that will cover each menu in a lot more depth.

Time / Effort / Energy

A lot of time, effort, and energy has gone into this theme so far ( a few hundred hours of coding and testing ), and a lot more will be going into it as time passes.

The Normal Offer

Normally, I offer this theme for either $27.00 ( without the custom display set or any extras ) or $97.00 ( with the custom display set and various extras )

This WSO Offer

For Warriors, I am offering the $97.00 version of my theme which includes:
  1. The Privateer Theme itself
  2. The Postlist / Boxlist Custom Display set
  3. Free upgrades to all future versions
  4. Free copies of new custom displays and quicksets as I create them for the next year ( normally only offered for 3 months )
  5. Priority support and help with the theme
Additionally, please take note of the following:
  • With each purchase, once you have had some time to try it out and get things the way you like them, send me your laundry list of things which you wish were included and/or find to be problematic. I will map all requests out together and start including and/or remedying the most requested/noted features. I want this to be a theme that grows based upon feature sets requested by people for practical use.
  • If you build out a site with this theme and would like an extra link to your site, I will gladly include your site on a showcased sites page so long as it is not something that will get my site blacklisted by the search engines.
  • At 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 sales I will be hunting down a fellow warrior to make me some graphics packages to use in creating some much nicer quicksets...which will be made available to all of you as a matter of course.
War Room Members: See the Privateer Theme post in the War Room before buying!

The Bottom Line:

1st 20 copies: $27.00 each
Next 20 copies: $37.00 each
Next 20 copies: $47.00 each

When you pick this up, you will receive a download link as well as my personal email address in case you have any questions.

And, of course, you can grab a copy of the privateer manual before you buy for more in depth information.

I have recently just got a copy of this theme and it really is one of the best Themes I have ever used,In fact it is the best theme I have used!

The thing I like best is the ability to set up my blog,to the style I want.

I can place adsense into my Post & Pages very easily,I can also have a static option on my frontpage and then have my post underneath it,or a static option below my posts.

The options are endless and with more updates to follow,I really can't see me ever using another wordpress theme again.

I am using this theme now on all of my blogs.

Thanks for such a great theme Tony, you have saved me a lot of hassle for now and in the future.

One more thing to mention,The customer service and help I have received from Tony has been second to none, any problems or issues with the theme, then he will help you out no questions asked.

Yep. I don't buy into licenses and such.

If you buy something from me, it is yours to do with as you please.

So:
  • Use it on as many sites as you want
  • Build a site with it and sell it if you are inclined to do so.
The only note on that last bit is that free updates ( new versions, custom displays, quicksets, etc. ) are only available to those that get a copy from me.

And speaking of updates...the next version will have full xml sitemap functionality, a custom css editor so that people who aren't too familiar with CSS can easily edit styles for different things, and a full intelligent caching system that will generate static pages for faster serving times.

Default An example of setting up the Home Page

For any interested, here is a quick video detailing a couple of ways to setup your home page within The Privateer theme.

As I add more custom displays, more variety will become available.

Some questions:

Does this support multimedia?

What browsers is it compatible with?

Can a flash header be easily inserted via admin,

Can I easily set it up to look like a business website instead of a blog or news-type website,

How module positions are there?

Thanks, that's it for now.

Pretty much anything that executes client side or works with normal html can be used in the various box areas. I've used it with youtube and a few other video sites without any problems.

It should work fine with all of the major modern browsers. I've test it with Mozilla, IE, Google Chrome, and Safari and had no problems.

Not above the header area.
Though one can easily be added above the page content ( below the header ).

I do plan to add two content bars to the top header section in the next version update, so that there will be two vertical bars for placing arbitrary html and scripts which will display anywhere in the header area.

I don't see why not.
If you stick to using pages and disable the post lists you will be left with about 5 horizontal content areas on the major template pages and single pages will display normally.
If you could provide an example of what you are thinking I could give a better answer to this question though.

Currently, there are 6 content areas per default page template ( home, search, 404, single page, single post, archives, etc. ):
  • The page level kicker
  • The page level byline
  • The page level summary
  • The page level above content html area
  • The page level below content html area
  • The page level footer
Additionally, post lists can also have a kicker, byline, and footer.

The next update will include two bars in the header section for content as well as sections above and below each sidebar.

If you pick a copy up and want more areas, just let me know where. I try to add to the theme based upon the actual wants of those who use it in addition to my own wants...and content areas are very simple to add. In fact, I'd go ahead and add them for you with the understanding that they would not be fully tested as of yet...but it really is a simple matter with the way I wrote the code...and I'd be willing to fix anything that went wrong quickly.

With custom displays, you can also create an arbitrary number of content areas on different page types, typically to the side of post lists.

Just a few quick notes for anyone interested:

Technical Support:
If you pick up a copy and have any problems at all with it, let me know and I will do my best to get them ironed out quickly.

So far, most issues people have had were simply due to unfamiliarity with the multitude of option menus.

Upcoming Features:
Here are the features that I am currently working on implementing:
  • More content areas, particularly in the header area and above and below the sidebars.
  • XML Site Map generation
  • A Popup CSS style editor for easy setting of styles without having to remember the multitude of style attributes available.
  • Newsletter replacement functionality
  • An intelligent, configurable caching system
While I am moving across the country to Virginia in one weeks time, I am looking to have the above functionality done and fully tested within one month.

Upcoming Custom Displays:
I am still deciding on what kind of custom displays to create next...so if you want pages with particular types of layouts and you pick up this theme...let me know and maybe I will create those next.

I plan to put up at least one new custom display set per month, provided I can come up with interesting layouts that people actually want.

Upcoming Quick Sets:
As soon as I am settled in Virginia, I am going to see about hunting down a good graphic artist or two to create some graphics for some nicer quick sets, integrating them with all of the current custom displays.

Invest in me and you will not be disappointed:
If you like:
  • What you see so far
  • The upcoming functionality
  • The idea of requesting and getting new page layouts created without having to hire someone to make them
  • The idea of getting nice new looks on a regular basis which are created based upon what users of the theme want
...then please consider picking up a copy of this theme and consider it a small investment in what is to come for it in addition to what it already is.

Styling the theme...

I've had a few people ask about styling this theme...so I will put a video or two together on that subject and post it here shortly.

You can style pretty much everything within it, using graphics or not if you see fit.

The main thing to consider when doing so is that if you are using a fluid layout you will want to be sure to properly position background images so that they still look right when people are using smaller or larger displays...but I'll cover that in the upcoming videos.

Default Re: WordPress Theme - The Privateer v1.3 - A Flexible Feature Rich Theme

Hi Jason,

Well...it has been quite some time since I have used Blogger, but unless things have changed drastically, it is still managed by a third party.

Personally, I don't like relying on other peoples decisions for my sites...and that is more than enough reason in my book to run your own site with WordPress.

However, after I put out the styling videos I will take a look at Blogger and see what the current pros/cons are from where I stand.

By default, WordPress works very well as a blog and you can literally customize anything you want...if you know the php and wordpress hooks to do so.

With Privateer, I am attempting to create a solution for those unfamiliar with php and css that will enable them to quickly be able to get a site that looks however they want without having to either learn php and css or hire someone who does.

For example, most themes have a particular layout, which is pretty much take it or leave it. If you like everything but the sidebar placement...then you need to figure out how to move the sidebars around in code without breaking things. With the Privateer theme, you can simply go into the admin menu ( Privateer - HTML Entities - Sidebars ) and choose to move the sidebar to whichever side you want and have it done immediately without digging into the code.

Another interesting aspect of the Privateer, which most other themes I have used lack is that the pages ( Home page, Search results page, 404 page, archive pages, page and post pages, etc. ) are full pages in their own right, which you can set titles, subtitles, and custom content for. You can even hide the list of posts if you are inclined to do so.

From there, you can add kickers, bylines, subtitles, and summaries to your actual wordpress posts and pages, which will be displayed within the post list of each page.

Finally, for even further flexibility, you can use custom displays to add new content areas on different pages...which most people cannot do very well without creating / finding custom templates or paying to have them made.

I've taken pains to try and make sure that almost everything can be styled via the admin menu.

Right now, to get full use out of the Privateer, one does need to know some CSS ( to style the various areas ), but that will be remedied as well in the near future once I have completed the CSS style editor so that each css area in the admin menu has an edit button which brings up a panel to set applicable styles with.

For those completely new to wordpress, especially those unfamiliar with css, html, and php, the Privateer primarily brings the following to the table:
  • A logical breakdown of the page types with options for them inside of the privateer menu. ( see the admin menu video above )
  • An easy way to get a good variety of looks for your site header.
  • An easy way to get the exact sidebar placements you want.
  • An easy way to get a variety of different layouts through the custom page content areas, post content areas, and custom displays.
With this theme, if you know the following css styling commands you can get an endless variety of looks:
  • background:
  • margin:
  • padding:
  • border:
  • font:
And I aim to make it so that even those with no real knowledge of css can set things up nicely here within a month via:
  • A custom css editor that provides options based upon the type of thing being edited.
  • Built in html editors for the various areas that accept html.
Anywise, off to finish those videos and I'll do my best to check out blogger tonight or tomorrow and give my thoughts on the two.

For someone who just wants a very simple blog layout and doesn't really care about how it looks or how things are placed, the Privateer / WordPress is probably overkill. But for those that don't have the time and/or want to learn php+css+html and do want to tweak things, I believe it is a bargain for the price.

I always have difficulty with the logic of this assertion (which we certainly see here quite often).

It seems to me that your commendable and understandable desire not to reply on other people's decisions is simply a reason to use self-hosting, not intrinsically a reason to use Wordpress rather than Blogger?

You do know that Blogger can be self-hosted, too? In fact, every time you start a new Blogger blog, it actually asks you whether you want to self-host it or use the free hosting at Blogspot.

Hence why I noted that it had been a while and perhaps things have changed

If you can self host blogger, then that point is moot. Of course, when I first started blogging I found that I preferred WordPress...but both have come a long way since those days...so I could not, at this point, note why one would use one over the other.

For me, it is simply that I know how wordpress works and can program it to do just about anything I want it to.

This certainly looks interesting, but COMPLICATED! How easy is it to customize, and does it come with pdf documentation? Videos are fine sometimes, but I like a printed manual with some things. Is that part of the package?

This theme started out as a series of Atahualpa 3.2 hacks, so it includes most of the functionality of Atahualpa 3.2 as well as some of the features of 3.4 which I liked.

Features in 3.2 that are not in the Privateer:
  • I removed the built in widgets as they felt too slow.
Features in 3.2 that have been changed in the Privateer:
  • Almost everything has been rewritten with php classes.
  • The menu system has been completely reworked to be ( I think ) a bit clearer on what is where.
  • Options that had to do with post and/or page level functionality have been moved out of the general option table and placed in template and post/page object tables for clarity and speed of database usage.
  • The built in SEO functionality has been heavily altered and tweaked to add most of the features that I like from other SEO plugins.
Features from Atahualpa 3.4 which were added to the Privateer ( different code, same general functionality ):
  • CSS and Javascript can be served directly and/or compressed.
  • Page and Post objects can have subtitles, individual meta robots settings, and summaries set.
Features added to the Privateer theme:
  • Rewritten code with custom database structures for faster processing and less database/system overhead.
  • The wordpress templates have been restructured to each have template level data ( kicker, title, byline, subtitle, summary, two extra content areas, a post list, and a footer )
  • The wordpress objects ( posts and pages ) have template level kickers, bylines, and footers in addition to their own thumbnails, subtitles, and summaries.
  • The options for template and object level items are within their own menus ( Home Page, Single Page, Single Post, 404 Not Found, Search, etc. )
  • Each template type can have custom displays with their own admin menus ( and for post and page objects you can specify the display you want to use on an item by item basis )
  • Quicksets, which are basically saved database options that allow you to change the entire look of your site with a couple of clicks instead of going through and tweaking all of the individual options.
  • More SEO options, primarily covering the functionality of Gregs High Powered SEO and some of what Platinum SEO does...more coming in the near future.
  • You can choose which tags to use for titles, subtitles, and summaries at both the page and post level and style them to get the look and feel you want...but the defaults are those I think are sanest from an seo standpoing ( H1 for page and post titles, H2 for template level page titles, H2 for the site headline, etc ).
The main things I kept from Atahualpa are:
  • The display layouts ( fluid and/or fixed width capabilities )
  • The header section ( adding two content bars shortly as well )
  • The sidebar layouts ( added overrides so one can easily choose to use the atahualpa style list bullets or normal/custom ones )
My focus right now is to add a few extra features that I want for my own sites, add any extra functionality that users request, and continue to make the option management pieces easier.

I haven't kept up with the newer Atahualpa versions as I really didn't like the way he was going with it from a codebase standpoint.

Note:
If you pick up a copy of this theme and do not like it, just ask for a refund.

I know how hard it is to make such decisions, but at the price I am asking and the functionality included (not to mention upcoming), I firmly believe that the theme is a bargain.

And I stand behind it 100%, so if you have any questions, concerns, etc. just let me know and I will do my best to answer them and/or help. Yes, I even help with styling and such.

Being a relatively new theme, I really haven't had too many questions come in, but as they do, I will be posting the answers on my site and/or making quick videos so that anyone interested can see them.

Oh my!
I had documentation together at one point...but it is horribly outdated!

I'll do my best to put together a manual today that covers the following:
  • How the menu system is organized
  • How to setup special things like e-Junkie, store links, forum links, etc. in the header bars
  • How to setup the header bars
  • How to setup the sidebars and widgets
  • How to setup default site wide styling
  • How to setup individual template level items (home, search, etc )
  • How to setup individual object level items ( posts/pages ) shown within templates.
  • How to setup the overall page layout
  • How to style the site overall as well as at the template and post levels
  • The seo functionality and how to put it to good use
I'll also include my basic css tutorial manual.

I'm crazy busy, but should be able to do at least that in an organized manner today as most of that information is already available on my site...but I too prefer to have a manual that I can print out if I want to.

I'll post an update when the manual is complete ( tomorrow at the latest ) and send a copy to everyone who has already picked up a copy as well.

*smirking* Talk about a major oversight!

I'll actually post a link to the manual here so that anyone interested in the theme can review the manual to get a better idea of what they would be buying.

And that sounds even better! If I could check out the manual first, I would feel much more confident buying. I will be watching for it, sounds like a really good theme.

Tony,

Am I able to use this them with other automated plugins? For example amazon plugins or datafeeder plugins for product type sites?

Also I usually change my the headers to all my sites, is that easy to do with the Privateer theme?

Thanks,

Paul

If you could give me a specific plugin, I could say for sure one way or the other...but I've yet to run into a plugin that I've had problems using with the theme as it has all the proper tags for plugin useage within it.

And if the plugin uses tags ( such as [datareader:option:option] ) then you could embed those into the posts and post level items without problems...and depending on the plugin anywhere else as well.

For the headers, it sounds like with this version you might need to copy the header.php file and then replace the function call that writes the site header to the page with the code for your own header...then select that as the wordpress header for the different template types.

In the next version you will be able to simply enter your custom header into the %content1 or %content2 bars and set the header to use just your content bar. From what people are requesting, I am thinking I should hurry up and add those header bars and a few other things and put up a minor version as they really are easy things to add...I was just going to wait to make them available until I get a couple of the more complex pieces added ( the css editor and intelligent caching system for example ).

If you could show me what you were looking for as far as the header goes, I could be more sure of it...and even build you a drop in alternate header file to select in the template menus as it sounds like a simple thing from a code standpoint...but something that this version might not be able to do via just the menu option panels.

I'll be driving across the country for the next three days as I move to Virginia, so please excuse me if I am unable to answer questions until this coming monday.

I will update this post once there to note that I am back online and available...and send any who have picked up a copy of the Privateer theme my updated contact information.

Hello,

This seems like exactly what I was looking for.

I can see already the many possibilities for some of my future projects. Once i've had a play with it I'll probably have some questions for you.

Regards,

Paul.

Thank you!

Definitely let me know once you have had a chance to use it about any problems you encounter, questions you have, and/or functionality that you would like to see implemented...whether it be plugin functionality, content areas, new custom displays, etc.

Once I am situated and stable in Virginia I'll be starting in on the next updates...and I am still looking for user feedback concerning any new types of custom displays that might be wanted. If I don't get any I'll just choose from those I am currently considering and get them out within a couple of weeks.

And for those that have purchased a copy, here are some things to think about that I'd be more than happy to implement upon request:
  • Have a plugin that outputs some kind of content and want it to be able to be displayed within kickers, footers, and bylines? ( see the sociable plugin displayed on my site for an example ) Just let me know and, if it uses tags to do the output I can work them in easily for you...and I'll send you the updated file in addition to including the changes in the next version.
  • Have a particular page look that the Privateer them cannot manage? Send me examples of such pages and I'll either show you how to set them up or create a new custom display that will let such pages be setup as soon as I have time to do so.
  • Is there particular seo functionality that you would like to see in addition to that already included? Just let me know and I'll consider adding it...and if I do I'll give you the updated file and include it in the next version.
  • Are there any plugins you are using that have tags but default to using hooks to rewrite content on the fly...which are slowing things down? As time permits I would be happy to use the tags provided to integrate them at the code level for much faster processing times.
With this theme, you aren't just getting a theme...you are getting a programmer who stands behind it and is willing to add the functionality you are looking for as time permits.

For big projects / additions I might decline or see if we can work some kind of arrangement out...but for most smaller things I'll be more than happy to add them to my growing to do list and get them implemented as I can.

Sure do!

My main site uses it at Privateer Web Solutions.
Another site using it is Paddle On Kayaking.

No fancy graphics as of yet, but it is pretty simple to set them up if you are familiar with css. The next version ( hopefully up within a week...and free to anyone who picks up a copy ) will have a css editor to make it easy for people who aren't too familiar with css to quickly and easily tweak styles for items that accept them.

And I'm all moved and settled in Virginia now so progress will resume and I'll be available for questions.
