So far, I have tested the IM niche, particularly niches related to driving traffic, ie adwords, google domination, press release. I have also tested 'how to make money', which was not working well.

I have not tested niches other than IM. Maybe it is not a good choice as the primary target market are folks doing PR on a regular basis, who can be webmasters or marketers.
