Agreed. When I was taking design, one of my instructors was irritated by how "Loud" my designs were. As if I felt I needed to decorate every single inch of a paper and not allow the paper to breath. LOL! That's the way he put it. Then he showed me examples of real life advertisements where much of the art never exceeded more than 2 colours. For example, a Bay logo on a basic black background. It was simple but effective. Same goes for book covers or websites. Like Google's homepage is just the logo with a tiny bit of text. But it works just fine.
Agreed about the client. Just give the customer what they want and everybody's satisfied.
