The origin of marriage

It is nearly impossible to trace the first marriage in the world but according to one of the first recorded books in history, the Old Testament in the Bible, ‘marriage’ was a family affair. In fact, there is neither any mention of any priest being present in the ‘ceremony’ nor any formal exchange of wedding vows.

To find any rationale behind the institution called marriage, we have to go back in history where there was a solid need for a secure environment for the next generation.

Not just this, society also felt the need for formalizing the transfer or grant of properties and the assurance of bloodlines. Marriage was the only means by which ancient society handled all these issues. Take the instance of ancient Hebrew marriages where the law made it mandatory for a man to wed the wife of a deceased brother.

There are several types of marriages that have existed throughout history. They include: polygamy, polygyny, polyandry, endogamy, exogamy, common law marriage and monogamy. Like every habit, which later becomes a custom, marriages too were essentially the habits and needs of the people and it turned into a custom of that particular sect.

Keeping in tune with the times, women too have had several roles in marriages. For instance, in ancient Egypt, though women were supposed to have equal rights as their husbands these rights were hardly put into practice.

One aspect of marriage that has however remained unaltered through out history is that families still arrange marriages of their children. The idea of marriage as something sacred and to be revered can be traced to St. Paul who compared the relationship between a husband and wife to that of Christ and his church (Eph. v, 23-32). During the Roman Empire (17 B.C.- A.D. 476) people from the lower classes who had turned Christians later had access to common law or free marriages where the father of the bride would give away the daughter and the mutual agreement was called a consensus to wed.

With the spread of Christianity the Church declared the ‘free’ marriage as ‘conscience’ marriage. This meant that the couple was supposed to keep their wedding promises and also continue with the marriage.

The recording of modern marriages actually began with the rich Romans who signed documents listing property rights and declaring to the world that this union be considered legal and not as a common law marriage.

From this era, recording of all marriages started and continues to this
date. Of course, the annulment of marriage rested solely with Roman men, and women had no role to play. The church was never involved in marriages until the 9th century.

In the 12th century, marriages involved only prayers and blessings and the couple offered their own prayers. Priests then intervened and demanded that an agreement or pact be made in their presence. This led to religion entering into the marriage ceremony.
