Very cool video & features. Couple Q's...
Are you able to add a "Top Promo" box (something that will show at the top of all pages and/or posts such as a banner, opt-in form, about section?) Will this interfere with other WP plugins? Are the layout adjustments always global, or can be drilled down to category, post, and/or page? Can the themes created be exported and used on other blogs w/o setting up again? Can you sell creations and/or use to create non-personal (client) sites? You mention, "Let's say you create a new Layout using Velocity and decide you want to use that same layout for 10 of your Landing Page sites. All you have to do is assign that custom Layout to all of those Landing Page Sites and you're done." ... does this mean you run all your blogs from one WP-admin, or just their layouts? Confused here... Looks like Artisteer on steroids with a quite a bundle of additionals. Might consider a lower beta test entry point like $7 for 30 days or something and then rebilled. Hard to commit to $49 without more videos/examples/walkthroughs ... at least for me. |

@Scott Million,
To start, I think I should make clear one point that will help to answer all of your questions: Velocity Sites are not WordPress sites What I mean by this is that, while Velocity does use the back-end functionality of WordPress as a platform, the sites you create appear to visitors and search engines as simple HTML documents. This means no posts, no pages, no categories, no blog, no tags, no authors, etc. All the things that come to mind when thinking of a 'WordPress Site' do not apply when it comes to Velocity. '...does this mean you run all your blogs from one WP-Admin...?' Aside from the fact they're not 'blogs', yes! This is really the central feature of Velocity. You install it once on your 'Mothership Domain'. It's basically a Landing Page & Mini-Site Factory. You crank out 'Satellites', which are just a couple tiny files to upload to your Satellite Domains. Then, when a visitor comes to one of your Satellites, those tiny files you uploaded call home to the Mothership, where the elements are assembled and sent back to the Satellite as HTML & JavaScript. What this means is that when you make a change on the Mothership to any of the elements that are used in one or many of your Satellites, the change is reflected instantly on your Satellites without having to re-upload any files or do any work on the Satellite itself. One Mothership can create, deploy, manage and track 5, 10, 100 Satellites or more. 'Will this interfere with other WP plugins?' Since Velocity doesn't really behave like a typical WP site, this all depends on the nature of the plugin you're working with. 'Are you able to add a "Top Promo" box (something that will show at the top of all pages and/or posts such as a banner, opt-in form, about section?)' We give you the tools to create virtually any layout you like. If you wanted an element to consistently appear on a number of pages, you could create a template and reuse it on multiple Satellites. 'Can the themes created be exported and used on other blogs w/o setting up again? Can you sell creations and/or use to create non-personal (client) sites?' Although it's not a feature in Velocity Beta, the official Velocity 1.0 release will include a feature for importing and exporting layouts. If you were running multiple Motherships (multiple licenses), you could easily transfer layouts between Motherships, or share between a development server and production server. Another benefit of the Layout Import / Export is that it sets the stage for designers to create stunning layouts for clients. A case like this would require that both the designer and the clients owned a license to Velocity. Lastly on this topic, by the time Velocity 1.0 launches we hope to have in place a 'Layout Store', where Velocity users will be able to purchase Layouts that are either niche-specific or just amazing designs. 'Hard to commit to $49 without more videos/examples/walkthroughs ... at least for me.' Edit: We've lowered the price of Velocity Beta to $29, and the Velocity 1.0 price to $99 We do have plenty of videos, documentation, tutorials and more in the works for the launch of Velocity 1.0 - the $99 version. In the meantime, we think $29 is a great deal on the opportunity to become an early adopter of an application that's going to make waves. Additionally, we want Beta Testers who are truly invested in making Velocity 1.0 an incredible product through their participation in the Beta Phase. The $29 commitment helps demonstrate a real investment in the future of our product. Thanks for writing, Scott, and let me know if you have any more questions. |

Very interesting concept and looks like a neat implementation. You've obviously put a lot of work into the design and process and I think you're onto a winner. Personally I don't use a lot of minisites or landing pages so don't believe I can contribute to the beta but will be watching progress as it develops.
Interesting choice to use WP as the platform? Good luck with it, Benz1 |

@benz1,
Thanks for the positive feedback. Stay tuned. As to using WP as the platform, the reason for this decision was twofold: 1. Our company has a background in Premium WP Theme and Plugin development. As a result, we can quickly deploy apps without having to reinvent the wheel. 2. The fact that a large and growing number of Internet Marketers use WordPress makes adoption of Velocity a straightforward process. That said, we're considering bundling Velocity 1.0 with an option to switch to a custom admin theme that hides all the WordPress odds and ends, leaving the user with what is essentially Velocity as a standalone application. It's the equivalent of how Windows 3.1 ran -on top of- DOS. Velocity runs -on top of- WordPress. Thanks again for your comment. Let me know if you have any other thoughts on it. |

Thanks for taking the time to answer my q's, I'm sure it helped a lot of people considering this.
Absolutely love the "mothership" lingo ![]() How about a sitemap, rss feed, and do the pages you create link together, or do you have to insert the links? |

@Scott Million,
The Mothership -> Satellite lingo started as in-house chatter during development and ended up sticking. We liked it so much we went with a space theme for our icons and our terminology. Glad you like it ![]() 'How about a sitemap, rss feed, and do the pages you create link together, or do you have to insert the links?' Velocity was built to be a simple, powerful, flexible & extensible tool. At its core, Velocity is really a HTML & JavaScript Output Factory. We give you the tools to create Layouts or Contents in a totally open manner. Embedding JavaScript code is a piece of cake. There are a number of services out there that will help you to create a tiny snippet of JS to be placed in your page. Two examples are aWeber for List-Building and Widgetbox for RSS, Twitter, Facebook, Slideshows and more. Just copy the simple JavaScript embed code they generate for you, and insert it directly into your pages using our integrated Content Editor. For a sitemap, the best solution would be to have one of the many online sitemap generators crawl your Satellite and create an .xml file for you to FTP to the root of your Satellite domain. There is not currently a feature that auto-links your pages within a given satellite. We do, however, give you the ability to assign links yourself in the Content Editor. We didn't want to restrict our users to just a single way of cross-linking their pages. If, during the Beta Testing phase, we received enough Feature Requests for an auto-link tool, we might explore implementing it. Thanks for the questions, and for giving me the opportunity to cast light on some of the details of Velocity. |

Another Q... is there a way to allow user commenting on pages/posts we create? If not, something in the works for the future?

@Scott Million,
Commenting on pages is not currently a feature, nor had we considered it. Again, though, if it's a popular Feature Request, we might fold it in to a future release. |

Good Eve All
Just signed up for the Beta test for this WSO - looks pretty sweet and handy. Looking forward to using this, especially to quickly customize landing pages and small sites. Quick ??? - Are we allowed to use this program with multiple hosting companies (multi use/install license). I ask because, I use two different hosting companies for my sites. Thank you for this great opportunity. Will keep you informed on how it performs, yada, yada. Regards Jim R

@Jqsam,
Thanks for signing up! With regards to the Velocity License: The way we currently have it structured, a Velocity License grants a user the ability to operate a single Mothership with an unlimited number of Satellite Domains. We are, however, in the process of determining how to handle licensing for multiple Motherships. We may offer 'Velocity Single Use' and 'Velocity Unlimited' licenses at different price points. That said, for the purposes of Beta Testing, we'd like to see Velocity running in as many different server environments as possible. We encourage Beta Testers to try Velocity on all their hosts. We currently have Velocity sandboxes running on 4 shared hosts and a VPS, but the more real-world data the better. Feel free to discuss this further in the Velocity Forum. We're certainly willing to be negotiable on multi-use License Agreements, especially with active and contributing Velocity Beta Testers. |

Wouldn't where these "Satellite" domains be hosted on, whether singularly or "multi-plurally" (spelling?) be irrelevant, since everything communicates back to the "Mothership"?Clarification?: Is this limited to Linux based web servers, versus Windows based servers, for ASP sites? Thanks, Tim. | |

@astaga,
You're correct that it doesn't matter where the Satellites are hosted. Aside from a single FTP upload of the basic Satellite scripts downloaded from the 'Satellite Builder' page, all creation and maintenance are performed on the Mothership. This is why our license covers a single Mothership and unlimited number of Satellites. A case where someone might want multiple Motherships and therefore multiple licenses, is if they use one Mothership on a cheap shared host somewhere for creating and testing campaigns, and another Mothership on a VPS or Dedicated Server for high-performing and proven Landing Pages. Velocity is written as a WordPress plugin which means, of course, it's in PHP. Velocity will run anywhere WordPress will run, so long as PHP has cURL enabled. Let me know if you have any other questions. |
