Ben,
Thought I'd already left a message here - must have been deleted? Im having trouble coming to grips with this new Forum. Cant see how to PM you so here I am, again. Your fellow Melburnian is half way through this excellent report and I must say you've done a great job. It's well laid out, only a few spelling mistakes (my pet hate) and contains some real nuggets. I always value a report by the number of pages I've dog-eared and your manuscript is positively canine! Tell me Ben, have you considered updating it with info on using the Google Trends tool, the new Google Insights for Search and the expanded Google Adwords Keyword Tool. I am trying to use them together to pick some niche(s) but am a little unsure of the numbers and what minimum you need to consider launching into a niche. Any help there would be fantastic. cheers Kel (only 2 weeks to Spring - bring it on!) |

Hey Kel,
You did comment previously mate, but it was on an earlier WSO post. Since we've lost the ability to 'bump' we're stuck reposting WSO's...sorta sucks because no one gets to see everyone elses reviews and comments, but I'm sure there must be benefits as well. Cheers for your input too, I'm stoked others are finding this info useful as well. I couldn't do without most of it. There were spelling mistakes? Dang! I had three people proof read that thing, they are also a pet peeve of mine. Guess we missed some, sorry about that. And the answer to your question is yes! Gtrends and the new Adwords tool is covered in the Keyword research section but it's also really handy for market research. I'm loving some of the additional tools Adwords has just implemented to assist keyword research. I was actually thinking of doing something more expanded, might just offer it to my purchasers list. I find Google Insight to be a huge help when setting up Adwords campaigns, and where to focus for a responsive demographic. I'll use an example. In reading the 7 Step System you'll notice I talk about some research I did to promote an ebook on Aspergers. I noticed when I was looking up some competitor sites that there were a lot from Oz. Sure enough, Australia has one of the largest search volumes in the world, outstrips the US by double. Even simply from an Adwords perspective, it helps to know where your target market is, and it offers us the insight into what words are being searched for in that demographic. Great little tool. As far as numbers go, I usually look to the Adwords tool and Gtrends to try and determine whether a niche is worth branching in to. For the average niche I like to see about 40-100+ searches for my main keywords. Again, it comes down to competition v volume and how confident I am at cornering part of a market that has people ready to part with their hard earned. From personal experience I know we can rank with words offering say 10k-30k competitor sites with broadmatch results of anywhere from 400k to a couple of million without masses of effort. That's with a fresh domain. By combining some of the methods with a bit more effort we can do better than that. But we of course want to be ranking for keywords that are going to offer us traffic volume, not just rankings, so my keyword research is dedicated towards finding that balance. No point ranking No.1 if no one is searching for the term. Nab a few spots on the first page for several keywords and it will usually add up to decent traffic. Which market to enter into also depends on profitability. I do like to use those three 'indicators' of a market that's willing to make purchases, but for really fresh niche's it pays to test the waters first. A really small niche might still be profitable even if the search volumes are low, if we can sell a high end product. As an example, a friend of mine who imports cars is looking to set up an exclusive online membership site where people can rent a vehicle. He knows his niche is minute, but at around 5k a pop...he doesn't need a large market, just one willing to pay. He already has existing customers waiting to lease other vehicles, so I dare say he'll do ok with it. Food for thought mate...I better get to writing
