Can someone tell me how to make a book a blog? I started one yesterday and quickly realized that each new post/chapter will be placed BEFORE the previous: i.e. people will read the book starting with the last chapter, from back to front if I continue. I am using blogger.

I am also wondering what you think about the launch of google's elibrary. Do any of you have an opinion on whether it will put an end to using PD for ebooks/blogs?

I don't know about Blogger, but if you use your own Wordpress blog (not the hosted version), you can install some plugins that lets you change the order of links.

You'd then post content to individual PAGES rather than POSTS.

There are also some plugins that will let you change the order of posts.

Google and other sources have scannned in tons of PD materials. I consider that a Good Thing, because if you can find a source for the material you're using, it'll save you a TON of data entry!

I'm working with an old book that I was able to find on Google Books, and I've saved each chapter into a different section. I go through each one and edit it to make the language more contemporary and the grammer a bit less convoluted. For example, it was common 100 years ago to use the term "supply" where we'd use the term "abundance" today. I think that by making changes like this, the text flows more smoothly and the reader won't be stopping as often trying to figure out what's being said.

I'm also including short "editor's notes" here and there.

Many of the services that have scanned in this old material are posting it in ways that aren't easily accessible (yet) by search engines. So searching for known phrases won't turn up hits on this text.

Anyway, the point is, you use the material to create bulk and establish some "context" for YOUR site. It doesn't matter if it's also found somewhere else.

Look at all the articles on eZineArticles.com for instance. Their rules are that you can use them only if you post them 100% unchanged to your sites. There can be literally hundreds of copies of any given article all over the place, and millions of articles in total. The duplication isn't the issue. The articles you post on any given site serve to create some measure of "coherence" or "contextual focus". The more that's there and the more coherence there is, the more likely the SEs are to treat your site as an "authority site".

I don't know if anyone has any suggestions for this but I have a problem. I found a PD book I want to copy and I was saving the pages as a jpg, then importing it into a pdf. Well, the images look fine, but when I imported it into the pdf, the text did not look good; some of the lines were too close and some of the text was dark when others were not. I have the text file and can always use that, but I was just looking for a quick way to make a pdf.

There are alot of pix in the book, that's why I thought of just copying the text as a jpeg as well.

The problem with just scanning in the pages and putting them into a PDF directly is that you need to use fairly high resolution to survive any kind of zooming-in, as well as to get the images in enough detail to avoid moire patterns showing up in the reproduced images. If you do that, the resulting PDF file will be HUGE -- several hundred megabytes. Such huge PDFs behave very poorly; they can take a long time to load, the Reader is very sluggish in its response to clicks, scrolling is very slow and labored; etc. It's not a good idea.

Many sources have done exactly what you've said: they scan in the docs, then run them through OCR. Both the text and PDF versions are available, and you can see how unfriendly the PDF versions behave. If it was that simple, these docs would be all over the place!

Some I've found actually save the individual page scans as JPEG 2000 (j2k) images. Those take forever to load just on their own!

So Google and other libraries have done the basic scanning work on lots of documents, but it's just the first step. You cannot really use this material directly, which is Good, since it keeps lazy people on the sidelines.

Easy job, don´t worry.

I always recommend to hire a VA at Odesk or Guru for $300-400/month, that will do the grunt work for you, while you work only on the things you love and know better.

Hello all, I am down in the dumps today and so everything is looking bad.........including my blogs. I don't have any money to get WP blogs on my own site and so in the meantime I have been using blogger to set up several blogs. I guess I am looking for a boost of confidence or some moral support from you...

I have had 2 or 3 blogs going for almost a month and I am getting minimal traffic. When Kneb said he put a blog together and sold it a month later I assumed that to sell it it must have had good traffic.

Do you think if I just continue to put a couple or 3 articles in each blog every week and sit back that I will eventually get traffic? I really don't know enough to start doing other stuff. When I get money I will palm all of this off.

Don't give up yet! Traffic is elusive at best, you must earn it. Blogs are tough because you are competing with millions of other points of interest. I use several free tools to help me get traffic:

• Jing - to make videos and post on blog and Youtube
• Animoto - to make slideshow videos and post the same locations.
• Forums of topic. Google search your niche + fourm. And post!
• Twitter - it's huge for me.
• Facebook, etc.

Go to Flipa.com and you will see may websites for sale with no traffic! But they are all self hosted. Continue to post articles and then re-write those article and submit them to article directories. Take videos of your articles and make How-to's out of them.

You keep at it and when you make some money please send some my way!! :-)

G'day Ruth, sorry to hear that you are down in the dumps, but take consolation in the fact that we all get like that from time to time! The trick is to do something positive to cheer yourself up.

If you can't afford to get your own hosting and domain names then there is nothing wrong with starting off with Blogger or Hubpages blogs, then moving up once you start to make a few dollars. As for just posting two or three articles a week and waiting for the traffic to roll in, well it isn't quite that simple, regardless of what the 'Gurus' tell you in their $97 ebooks.

What you need to do is to write articles that people want to read, and that involves keyword research. Are you doing any keyword research before you write your articles, or just 'writing from the hip'?

If you go to the Google Keyword Tool (just google the term if you don't have it bookmarked already) and type in your niche, Google will actually tell you what people are looking for. Just look for keyword phrases which would make sense within the title of an article, and with a reasonable number of monthly searches. Then write your articles around these phrases. Make sure that you tick the 'Use Synonyms' box and check the 'Related Searches' list under the main list and you will usually find a lot more ideas for articles that you may not have thought of yourself.

After you have written and published each post, make sure that you 'ping' it, and the search engines will index the article pretty quickly, and you already know that there are people out there looking for exactly that article (Google told you so!), so you should start to get an influx of traffic.

You can also go to EzineArticles and look in your niche to see what sort of articles that people are already checking out, and use these as inspiration for your own posts -- don't steal their articles, but read through them and see if you get any ideas of your own.

Also consider posting each article on EzineArticles, etc after you have posted it on your blog for extra traffic. But wait a couple of days before you do that so that the search engines know that you are the original source rather than EzineArticles. Hope some of this helps, and more importantly, cheers you up a bit -- never, ever give up!

One of Liz Tomey's favorite sayings is "How do you eat a giant elephant?"
Answer: "One bite at a time!"

Pick one website, and devote all your time to it. Get it to the stage where it is getting consistent traffic, and you will get consistent sales. When you are happy with the results from that website, then move on to the second one. As for checking your adsense stats, forget all about them for the time being, once you get the traffic flowing they will take care of themselves. In the meantime you will feel like slitting your wrists if you check them every day!

As for pinging your blogs, most modern blog platforms like WP, Blogger, etc, have the service built-in -- depending on what platforms you are using, you may need to check your options to make sure that the service is turned on. Don't worry, you won't break anything, all it does is let the world know that you have updated your blog. This is done using the RSS feed, but you don't need to know all the geekie stuff!

There are free and paid services out there for doing this manually if you want to promote a normal HTML website with an RSS feed, or if your blogging platform doesn't have a Ping service built-in. Just Google Ping-O-Matic for a good free one.

Some of the platforms like WP do have a ping list built-in, but it is usually pretty short, so here is a better list that you might be able to cut'n'paste into these platforms instead of the original list.

If you're on Kneb's list you probably got this email, but just in case - Kneb says that he's completely recovered and ready to release the update. He says that it should go out on Saturday.
