Is this just for the Internet Marketing niche, I don't see how you could use those backlinks to promote anything other than that?

I'm not very sure what you meant with your question.

The idea of this strategy is to use software submissions to gain more backlinks.

More backlinks + carefully optimized pages = higher rankings
