No tedious article marketing, very little blog commenting (only a few very high PR comments). I completely feel your pain, i hate both those things too.

The methods definitely work in the UK, just make sure that your hosting is also based in the UK, and that you set Webmaster tools to geotarget your site to the UK. The SEO methods will then focus around Google UK,
