Do You Ever Ask, What is High Blood Pressure?

You may be wondering, what is high blood pressure? It’s not a question that many people are worried about, but as you grow older, and more health conscious, you are likely to be more concerned about maintaining good health and keeping your blood pressure close to normal levels. The trouble with high blood pressure is that you can feel perfectly normal, yet still be in danger.

By medical definition, high blood pressure is a sustained blood pressure that is higher than 140/90 mmHg. So, what does that actually mean? The first number is the systolic pressure, which records the pressure in your arteries when the heart is pumping blood through them. The second number is the diastolic pressure. This records the pressure when the heart is relaxed and at rest and not pumping excess blood. If either of the numbers is too high on a sustained basis, you have high blood pressure, and you need to do something about it.

It is perfectly normal for blood pressure to rise when we undergo any kind of exertion. In healthy individuals, the heightened pressure drops back to normal levels fairly quickly again once the exertion stops. This doesn’t happen with people who have high blood pressure as it takes longer with them for the pressure to drop, and it will still remain elevated. This is especially so if you eat the wrong foods, if you are overweight, and if you fail to exercise regularly.

If you worry unnecessarily over your high blood pressure, you may find the stress generated actually causes high blood pressure! Yes, stress is a prime cause of the condition. Our lives always have a level of stress, but it’s when the stress becomes unmanageable that our blood pressure can become sustained at a high level. Removing stress from our lives is not always easy, but it is something we should all try to achieve.

The symptoms of high blood pressure are usually not obvious at all.
