Your followers generate backlinks by retweeting your tweets. The eBook explains how to encourage this.

Artificial followers are easily spotted simply by checking someone's graph at twittercounter.com - they tend to drop off with time, whereas real followers don't unless your tweets really suck!

I wouldn't bother deleting your account and restarting, instead just start doing things right from this point on. You will soon have more real followers than fake ones.
