“How to keep Your Money From being Murdered” is a famous headline from legendary Direct Response copywriter Gary Halbert – the guy who wrote copy thats sold millions and millions of items. That's the original artwork above – with the addition of some photoshopped blood. It has been said that Gary Halbert at some point in time was the second biggest buyer of space advertising in the U.S. second only to General Motors.

One of his gangbuster 631 words/1 page sales letters once generated over 7 million customers, made $333,000 per day, brought in 20,000 orders a day, and required 40 employees just to handle the bank deposits. That was in the Seventies - back in the day - the heyday of Gary Halbert. Sadly, Gary died some years ago.

I was lucky enough to be at a presentation of Gary Halbert's at Florida Keys in 2003 . That's me on the left of Gary in the photo below. I say “lucky” because Gary didn't make too many public appearances – he was a rather private man – but when he did, the place would be packed with marketers hanging off his every word.

In these rare public appearances he would come out with gem after gem. In his so-called gun-to-the-head marketing style – he asked himself the question

He found the question helped focus his mind on what's essential in direct response. And he went on to write that unbelievably successful 631 word/1 page sales letter – the most widely mailed sales letter in history. It went out to billions of readers. You read right – billions. And made a lot of money for his clients.

Gary said “being on target is much more important than being facile with words” - which is pretty surprising coming from a copywriter, don't you think? He said rather than concentrating on your copy – your words – you should be concentrating on who your target audience is. Gary illustrated that by once asking an audience “To the men in this room - how many of you are addicted to knitting?” None raised their hand and he made the point that no matter how great the copy may be, it wasn't going to sell a single knitting product to this group.

Now this might seem like a marketing ploy but I can assure you it's true. Several years ago while moving, my Internet Marketing collection was packed up in boxes, along with most of my other belongings and sent to storage. There just wasn't room for it all in my new place. On the one hand, I'm a bit miffed that Bob is letting the cat out of the bag with this footage. Now every bastard will be cloning Halbert's money-making techniques and copy (instead of just me

). Halbert was THE MAN. But on the other hand it's great that we get to see this footage. There's some clips on YouTube of various talks he gave (not sure if it's part of this one) but they're only like a minute or something each - not 90 minutes like you have here. Halbert's stuff is possibly my #1 swipe file. It's a bit dated now but all I do is put a spin on it. Like instead of saying "How to make money with your credit cards" - a classic Halbert headline - I might say "Dude - here's how to make money with your credit card". Now just watch - the Forum will be awash with every wannabe copywriter using that technique. Ah well. They dog my every move some of these cats. Caught Mubarak yesterday using "butt-ugly Belcher Button" - a direct pinch from my copy. BTW Bob, wanna give me a review copy? I know there's only 25 but still...what if I watched it and sent it back? And I'll front the postage to and from Paris.
