Dana, I have a question on this. I see that in short order people who read your report (ex Alex Sol) are getting lots of followers very quickly.

What I wonder is - how meaningful are the 'numbers'? In absolute terms, isn't having 'untargeted' followers no better than having 'untargeted' traffic? That is, just as website traffic is more about quality than quantity, does the same hold true for Twitter 'traffic'?

Kat, I would look on it like having an email list. Not everyone on your list is going to purchase from you, not everyone is going to be paying attention to what you are saying...but if you have a list of thousands, it's a numbers game - some people are likely to turn into customers.

The followers aren't completely untargeted, anyway - I recommend following the followers of people in your field, whether that be IM or pet owners.

I've been on Twitter for a while now, and never really used it much. However, even the Washington State Department of Transportation is on Twitter. You can keep in contact with a lot of people this way.

I followed 2000 people in my first day - BUT - I have had a couple people (out of over 1000 who have purchased this ebook so far) - tell me they were suspended for "aggressive following". So if you want to be on the safe side you could just follow a few hundred people in a day.

After reading all four pages of this thread and seeing all the praise, I'm partially sold. But I have a few questions:

1. Will these techniques work for promotion of non IM related things, like for musicians (like me)?
2. Will I have to spend time following people and if so how much time?
3. Is there some other software we have to buy and/or download to get the followers?
4. Is this somewhat similar to all those MySpace friend adding bots out there?

I go on Twitter a few times a day, for maybe 10-15 minutes each time. Yes, this works for new accounts - I tell you what you need to do to get lots of followers in your niche. No, you don't need software, I did this all manually.

What are you trying to accomplish with Twitter? In my case I'm selling my press release writing services.
