Green tea has been lauded for centuries for its healing properties. Ancient Chinese legends disagree over how green tea was actually discovered. One such legend states that a man named Shien Non Shei accidentally tasted the juices from a tea plant leaf when he was out walking one day and felt that the tea had special properties. Another legend promotes the idea that Emperor Shennong ‘discovered’ green tea when a blossom fell into a cup of hot water he was drinking. Whatever the case, since its discovery over 5000 years ago, traditional doctors from the Far East have been praising green tea for its medicinal properties.


Myth: Green tea acts to dehydrate the drinker.
The truth: Many modern medical scientists have attempted to debunk the claims that green tea has special medicinal properties. Some have suggested that green tea dehydrates drinkers. This is possibly due to the detection of moderate levels of caffeine in the drink. However, a 2006 study proved that green tea actually acts to rehydrate drinkers – quite the opposite from the suggestion that green tea dehydrates! According to the scientists performing the study, green tea does not contain the level of caffeine required to dehydrate drinkers.

Myth: Due to the presence of caffeine in green tea, the drink causes issues with sleeping.
The truth: In actual fact, green tea is listed at MedicineNet.com as a treatment for sleep disorders! Green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid derivative shown to have soothing properties. However, L-theanine’s effect on the production of serotonin by the body remains a matter of scientific debate.

Myth: Drinking decaffeinated green tea will have the same good effects as drinking caffeinated green tea without the caffeine side-effects.
The truth: Decaffeination is a process that requires the use of chemicals to remove the caffeine from a drink. Naturally, these chemicals will have the unintended effect of impairing some of the good effects of green tea on the body. In one green tea study, antioxidant values were shown to be between 728 and 1686 units per gram of caffeinated tea, whilst decaffeinated tea was shown to only contain 507 to 845 units per gram. It should be noted that whilst the decaffeination process removes many of the antioxidants from green tea, it does not remove all of them. To this end, it can be shown that when drinking the same amounts of regular (caffeinated) green tea and decaffeinated green tea, the regular tea will yield the greatest benefit for the body. However, when different amounts are consumed such that enough decaffeinated green tea is drunk so that the extra consumption cancels out the effects of the decaffeination process, it is possible to receive a similar benefit.

Myth: It is possible to lose one pound a week by just drinking green tea and not increasing exercise levels or adjusting diet.
The truth: Studies have consistently shown that it is not possible to lose one pound a week by just drinking green tea. To explain why, it is necessary to examine how weight loss can be brought about, and the effect of green tea on this process. Weight loss occurs when the level of energy expended by the body is greater than the intake level of energy due to food consumption. When this occurs, the body is required to draw on its energy stores (i.e. ‘burn’ fat) to make up for this shortfall in energy intake. To lose one pound a week, a person would have to maintain this shortfall at 500 calories a day. The level of caffeine and other chemicals in green tea causes a change in thermogenesis, the process of heat production in organisms. Japanese researchers have found that drinking five cups of green tea a day results in a calorie deficit (shortfall) of 70-80 calories per day – in other words, nowhere near enough to lose a pound of weight per week. In fact, assuming exercise and diet do not change, a person could expect to trim one pound off their body weight after 43 days, according to the researchers.

Myth: Low incidences of cancer in societies with a high rate of green tea consumption is not due to the medicinal properties of the tea itself, rather other cultural factors that come into play.
The truth: According to researchers in the United States, tea catechins (antioxidants) acted as “powerful inhibitors of cancer growth” in laboratory tests by reducing the “incidence and size of chemically induced tumors” and inhibit the growth of tumor cells. In studies involving humans in China, men who drank green tea on a regular basis were half as likely to develop stomach or oesophageal cancer as men who drank little or no tea.

It’s clear that green tea has numerous health benefits, although exactly which health benefits exist remain to be seen. Remember that when starting a new diet, consultation with a medical professional should occur.

A scientific analysis of the benefits of green tea

Green tea is widely touted as a ‘super drink’ for its restorative properties. Discovered in China over 5000 years ago, Chinese legends differ on who discovered the tea, but what is known is that it made its way around Asia shortly after. In 1191, the Zen priest Eisai published Kissa Yojoki, the ‘Book of Tea’. The book discussed the benefits of drinking green tea, including easing the effects of alcohol, quenching thirst, easing indigestion, preventing fatigue and improving brain function. Since then, the qualities of green tea have been subjected to constant scientific debate, although some health benefits have been proven by researchers.

According to research presented at the Sixth International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention, the polyphenon content of green tea acted to halve the rate of colorectal tumors in rodent test subjects. A separate study conducted by a Japanese university involving healthy human test subjects found that participants in the study who consumed at least five cups of green tea a day were 26% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than participants who drank less than one cup a day.

Green tea has also been proven to act to lower cholesterol levels. In a trial conducted at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, 240 adults were given either an enriched green tea extract in the form of a 375 mg capsule or a placebo. After the twelve-week trial had concluded, participants in the test group were found to have significantly less ‘bad’ cholesterol than those in the control group. The researchers concluded that the enriched green tea extract could be used in conjunction with other approaches to lower cholesterol.

In the United States, the National Cancer Institute, a member of the National Institutes of Health, has become very much involved in the study of green tea as a potential cancer inhibitor in recent years. All tea is derived from the same plant, and hence delivers the same type of health benefit, although due to the less processed nature of green tea, the health benefits of black tea are considered to be inferior. Laboratory findings have shown the antioxidants present in green tea to be effective in hindering the incidence and growth of chemically induced tumors. Tests on humans reported by the National Cancer Institute have shown that green tea can sometimes act as a cancer inhibitor, but other times may not. For example, two Chinese studies showed that drinking green tea halved the risk of stomach and oesophageal cancer. A study in a dental hospital showed that the consumption of two cups of green tea a day, taken in conjunction with tea extract, limited the size and incidence of a precancerous oral plaque. However, a Dutch study (this time involving black tea) found no direct link between tea consumption and protection from cancer.

Green tea has not been proven to have a therapeutic effect on instances of prostate cancer. One National Cancer Institute trial involving 42 patients drinking four cups of green tea daily for four months did not yield significant results. Only one patient exhibited a temporary improvement, whilst the rest experienced side-effects such as diarrhea and nausea. Other National Cancer Institute studies into the effectiveness of green tea are ongoing.

Green tea can have adverse effects on some patients, especially those taking certain prescription medications. According to a quotation published on the British Columbia Cancer Agency’s web site, “pregnant women, nursing mothers and patients with cardiac problems” should limit their consumption of green tea to two cups per day. According to University of Southern California researchers, consumption of green tea causes the Velcade cancer drug to become therapeutically useless, cancelling out most of its effects. A component of green tea extract, EGCG, was found to bond with the active Velcade molecule, making Velcade unable to bond further and destroy tumors. Therefore, for patients in these risk categories, including those taking the Velcade cancer drug, the consumption of green tea is not recommended.

Green tea also has benefits for the skin. According to one study, the topical application (use on the skin through a special formulation) of green tea, when used in conjunction with sunscreen, can reduce inflammation caused by the sun, as opposed to blocking UV rays. However, a 2005 study showed that the use of a 10% green tea skin cream and twice-daily 300 mg oral supplement did not significantly reverse the effects of photo-aging, when compared to those in a placebo group.
