You don't. You start with those keywords you can outrank competitors for (aka ones that aren't super competitive). And expand over time as you go. All at once would lead to frustration. It's a marathon not a sprint.

If i rank a few keywords first, do I need to keep link building to keep the rank, then go on with another keywords. If this process goes on, my link building budget will be higher & higher!

Like Erik said, it's best to start with a few keywords that you can actually "win" with, especially if you are new to seo. These are usually the long tail keywords, 3-4-5 or more words per keyphrase. These will increase your sites relevance, and probably bring you little traffic and youll get to learn seo during the process. Then hit the higher trafficked ones over time. If you did it all in one go, you better have a lot of people working and a lot of money to spend (plus, at the same time you have to factor in how you do the links, etc)

You actually have to keep building links. It's just the way it is. You don't necessarily have to target the same links and keywords each month (while adding new target words).

As you are building relevance and trust to your site about the topic, youll notice that the site will get traffic from different keywords (mostly words that google will hide from you ) and as you build more links, the more your page rankings crawl up. Then once you reach this point (you dont have to be number 1, maybe set a goal to get to page 1) you can start with the other pages/keywords. You can split the time and budget to the other keywords.

Lastly, make sure you work on your onpage seo and of course, your conversions. The better your conversions, the better your bottomline is, the more you can reinvest.

Will this work well for eCommerce sites as well or do you have solution that will work for eCommerce sites? I sell products in a specific niche so keywords are few and writing articles is beyond hair pulling. No one wants to read about some products they just need them. You can sell millions of shoe laces but no one wants to talk about them or read about it in a blog.

Yes, it does work. The thing with ecommerce sites though is that you have to be creative with it. Obviously, like you said, nobody will "talk about products like that" lol

so you have to reach out to clients to blog about you, have the brand present in social media, do some creating linking to your categories (WITH UNIQUE CONTENT ON THOSE PAGES), link baits to certain pages, find where the "market" hangs out and continue to build presence their, monitor people searching about it and drop links there, talk with certain companies that offer shoes or related products and build a relationship with them, and lots more. All those, goes hand in hand with our service.
