To rank, the most important thing is to know the power of your competitors websites in the top 10 (first page). If you cant outrank them, then it's basically game over. To see how strong they are and how difficult it would be to get in - every page authority metrics of your competition for every keyword like, linkjuice, PR, domain authority, backlinks, anchor text, onsite SEO, etc are weighed and their strength reflected..

Keywords in your niches are analyzed thoroughly for competiton including PR, domain, backlinks, social signals, etc so basically, the whole process is scientific. Also, remember that your content must be quality, unique content that's helpful to your visitors. Google loves that. And your backlinks must also be natural looking and diverse. Getting the right keyword is just the first but most important step, and there's where I come in.
