Combining 2 wordpress installs into one?

I have a blog that I've been writing for about 5 years, mostly as a hobby. However, I'm looking to really expand it and take it to the next level.

Here's the problem.

When I first set it up, I knew nothing about wordpress, web design, SEO, etc.

Currently I have one installation of WP at www.example.com
and a second at www.example.com/blog

They both have the same theme and plug-ins, so to the end user, it looks the same.

But, it's a bit of a pain and I really regret doing it this way!!

Is there an easy way to merge the installations of WP into one?

How much is this going to affect my rankings?
I'm okay taking a bit of a hit if it means that the site is going to be much easier for me to manage going forward.

Would you try to fix this if it was your site, or just leave it as is?

Thank so much! I'm new here, but looking to learn lots.

Setup 301 Redirects from /blog to / - This will help pass the link juice from /blog to /. Just make sure you do this to every existing page on the /blog and it is redirecting to the most relevant page.

If it was me, I would unistall one, or both for that matter. Reinstall and make sure you recreate the URL structure and content for each page. Could be a lot of work.If you have a lot of content it is a big task. Why not hire a good webmaster and have him do it for you?
