Wordpress Theme Update Issue [URGENT]

Hi guys,

Freaking out a little since I've spent days updating this theme and the sidebar stopped showing up. Anyways I updated the theme stupidly and now I've lost all the changes I made to files via the Wordpress editor to customise the site.

Is there any way I can almost go back to what the site looked like 5 minutes ago before I updated the theme?

Totally freaking up right now since I think I've lost all the custom changes I've made.

Regards,
Daniel

If you were not using a child theme and you made the changes directly to the main CSS file, you basically replaced the old file with the new file. Many of the themes that are out there now not only will take a child theme, but have a place in the dashboard for customization. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but odds are your changes are gone unless you had the file somewhere else as well.

Holy shit.. so I've lost it all??

No chance that the host can backup to what it looked like yesterday?

I can't have lost all of it - I don't even know where to start in fixing it.

Do you still have the original theme files that you uploaded from the start ? Also might just be a quick coding change to make it all work the way you have it now if its only the sidebar not displaying.

      Couple of options:

Contact your host - Sometimes they do keep backup copies.

Alternatively type into your web browser: cache:www.yoursite.com - this brings up Googles last crawl of your website. It's a long shot, but you might then be able to then view the source code from this page (right click on the page and then press inspect element), and save elements from your CSS file.

      Good luck!

Edit: Depending on how regularly your site is crawled (and how often your site is visited), will change the frequency Google crawls your page. So if you can view the source code from the cached version, then work quickly as it could be changed soon!

Definitely check out Child Themes for next time though.

Basically they let you have two themes installed; the main one and a child one.

The child theme starts off blank and you only ever add the changes to this theme. Any elements in the child theme have priority over the main theme (so you don't have to delete anything from the main theme).

Then you can update the main theme as often as you want (which is recommended for security reasons), and the child theme stays intact with the customisations you've made.

You can use a Wordpress plugin to create a child theme. It's then selected under your theme chooser as your active theme (but references the main theme).

uhmm. sorry mate, going to the previous changes from your 5 min. or so -updates will not be restored,(unless you have a copy).

one option, is if you have the original theme, then maybe you can start from the beginning.
    Goodluck.
