Default making wordpress seo friendly?

I'm still learning wordpress and curious to how to make my links seo friendly. instead of http://domainname.com/?p=123 would like http://domainname.com/about/. How do I go about changing that. I tried changing the permalink but then i get a 404 error that it can't find the page of course because it doesn't exist. . . I know theres an easy answer

thanks guys

Go to Settings/Permalink and tick the Custom Structure and put this in the text box:

/%category%/%postname%/

It's been awhile since I last studied seo, but is it still true that as you go down the category/page hierarchy the lower the Page Rank?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but it seems on-topic.

depending on your permissions, you may need to manually update your .htaccess - but wp should tell you that on the permalinks settings page.

Yes - I agree with Radio. The process is pretty straightforward now and WordPress will tell you if you need to paste code into your .htaccess. It will give you the code to paste, too.

One plugin that's well worth installing is 'Redirection'. I would have installed this before changing your permalinks, but they're done now so no matter.

However, it's still a good one to have installed as it takes care of any url changes to any of your posts by automatically re-directing to the new url.

Cheers,

Martin.

The more deeper the /%postname%/ is in the url, the less importance Google places on it after what I have been told.

Just make a empty .htaccess in the root folder of your WP installation and set it to be writable.

Now its does not matter much if you add in the categories into the permalink.

The more important is to add in the post name that has the keywords in it, that is more important.

All you need to do is to change it to /%postname%/ in the permalink setting.

By the way, you might want to change the category to topics, as this will increase click through when your visitors are surfing in your blog.

I simply suggest you chaning the permalinks to %postname%.html

as i have noticed that Google likes .html extentions..while indexing
