Confused: Twitter Bootstrap?

While I've designed about 40 to 50 websites using WYSIWYG & CMS scripts, I'm a rookie at coding from scratch. I took w3schools courses on HTML & CSS, but haven't yet had time to take others.

I'm confused of what 'Twitter' bootstrap is. My understanding is bootstraps are essentially like libraries that highly reduce the coding required by the developer in a way similar to what JQuery does with Javascript?

What I find confusion though is if Twitter Bootstrap is somehow related to Twitter.com? I don't know if it is just a model of bootstrap that web developers use, or if it must be somehow used on or in conjunction to Twitter? Seem strange that a social media company like Twitter would be designing something like this for web developers?

Any thoughts or feedback would be interesting to hear & appreciated.

Kindest regards!

Randall

    Think this explains it well:

Bootstrap (front-end framework) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

References Twitter because was developed by two guys from Twitter.

I have not personally used it, but like you, hear about it quite a bit. I am more a wordpress person.

Hopefully some one with more experience using it will post.

Bootstrap is a front-end framework for rapid site design and development. It's just CSS and Javascript with documentation that instructs you how to write HTML to leverage the framework. For example, if you want drop down menus, you just look at the documentation on the site and use the instructions for making your own drop down menu.

@ron - If you are a wordpress person, you can absolutely still use Bootstrap. There are TONS of wordpress themes that use Bootstrap!

There are a few great things about bootstrap. If properly implemented, your site will look great on computers, tablets, and phones! In this sense it is a "responsive" framework. Also, if the base framework doesn't have something you are looking for, chances are there is an add-on that does what you want. It is the most active project on all of Github, so there are a boatload of add-ons all over the web.

Thank you for the explanation, sure helps

Ya, I knew there was some cross over for wordpress, seen quite a few theme's built on it. Although, I am pretty much in to Genesis these days.

Still sounds like some coding needed. Not being lazy, just don't have the time to learn some new things. Though I'll have to check in to it.

Thank you so much for the explanation. It almost looks like it would be a good thing for someone to learn that is easier than learning Javascript since it sounds like it operates similar to a shorthand of Javascript for developers (kind of like JQuery I'm guessing), where you aren't re-inventing the wheel every time you want to build an add on.

Very impressive about the mention of how responsive it is and the fact that there is such a large development community to support it.

Sounds like I need to learn this stuff. Now, the problem, just as mentioned above is learning to find the time to learning it lol..

<3 bootstrap! GeneralLedger did a good job of explaining what it is so I'll just say it's definitely something worth familiarizing yourself with.

bootstrap seems to be the way to go, just planning to use framework instead myself. Cherry framework looks like a very good option and has very nice looking themes: Cherry Framework - The Best WordPress Framework might be worth checking out.

Have been working with foundation in the past but in non-wordpress environment.
