I'm fairly new to web site design.

How do people use wordpress to make easy web sites?
I thought Wordpress was simply for blogging?

  WordPress is so flexible and if your WordPress consultant knows what he or she is doing they can create a site for you and it doesn't even look like a blog.
  
  I recently finished a makeover for a client. She wanted to use WordPress as a content management system and she had over 40+ pages in her original website.
  
  What's so cool about WordPress is that you can usually do a one-click install via Fantastico if your hosting account has a cPanel if you wanted to do this by yourself.
  
  Then you simply login to your WordPress dashboard and start adding themes, plugins, and adjusting settings. I make it sound easy and with some guidance it really is.
  
  There's a lot of free info floating around to learn WordPress, but if you haven't got the time to sift through all the information, then hire someone with the right expertise to teach you.

You can search at google for the theme. I just use a theme and you'll create a great website.

when I first tried wordpress I found it really confusing, however now I love it, I wouldn't build a site with anything else. It is just so flexible to design and really easy to use for sites.

If you are not sure how to set it up get someone to help you and get them to show you what they do. I did this the first time I used a magazine stye theme, just paid someone $50 on elance to let me see how they did it and it helped a lot. It's worth perservering with.

So here is your answer:
Wordpress offers a good solution to both pages and posts. If you want a simple company website you can just use pages and forget about the posts. You can setup a static page as a front page and post all of your content as pages - it's a great solution.

You can also create a website structure with post-containers (categories) and use them as page-gateways.

Many of websites that I designed are based on Wordpress and many of them don't even have posts:

All of those use Wordpress for their base - you can do almost anything with it.

Yes... you can have almost any solution on your website that you dream about for free

I design templates from scratch but you can easily download cool free templates from the web (just google Wordpress templates).

The key to being able to make solid sites for people using Wordpress is to master theme creation. If you can design and code Wordpress themes, you can make Wordpress do just about anything you want.

Wordpress has the reputation of being just a blog, whereas a system like Joomla is considered to be a CMS. Personally, I think if the best content management system is the one that allows a person to manage their website content the most easily, then that makes Wordpress the best CMS.

I've worked with a lot of different systems, and they are all way too complicated for most users. Wordpress on the other hand, most people can find their way around just by following their nose.

Combine that with the fact that you can build themes to allow for all different kinds of purposes, and you have the most powerful website building tool available.

There are lots of website creation sites, and alot of them are very SEO friendly. NetID is one that comes to mind.
