Be careful with free themes because a lot of them contain malicious code or backlinks to the creators site that are not relevant to your niche. If you are going to use them, at least get them from wordpress.org and not from the sites that come up if you google 'free wordpress themes'. Same thing for plugins, make sure to get them from wordpress or a reputable source like code canyon.

    Good luck!

The WP themes that come with the installation 2014,2013, ect will be safe. The 2011 theme is a nice simple one that can get you going fairly quickly.

If you start looking online for free themes you need to follow Nick's advice above, there is a lot of nasty stuff lurking out there and you don't want to jeopardize your site.

The "safest" way is to make sure you are getting your theme from a reputable developer. The free themes you see on WordPress.org get reviewed and are for the most part "safe." The same applies to the plugins.

The issue is that some of the developers tend to abandon the development of their themes and thus leave a security weak spot when the WordPress core application is updated.

When you are choosing a theme, make sure you check the last time it was updated. This will give you an idea of how involved the original developer is.

Definitely nothing wrong with using free themes. If you're just starting out, I would recommend trying some themes from wordpress.org first. And the vast majority of plugins are free, so that's really a non-issue(like Nick mentioned, as long as they're from a reputable source).

Your themes and plugins won't really affect SEO, that's really more dependent on your content. Though I wouldn't worry about that yet while you're still learning the ropes to building a site.

Only go for free plugins on WordPress.org, every plugin you may need is here. Try WR PageBuilder on WordPress.org, it is the first thing you will need to build any page.

For free themes you should be careful choosing a good theme provider. Site with mass small theme providers at one place are often not trustable.
