sub-domains and wordpress

Has anyone ever installed another instance of Wordpress on a newly created sub-domain of the main domain - where the main domain is already in use with Wordpress installed previously?

Once this is done, can I choose another theme than the one used for my main domain? Everything is considered separate? Would the login then be subdomain.maindomain/wp-admin?

Should it install exactly as usual? Any problems I should watch out for?
Thanks
Tony

    Yes to all your questions. A sub-domain should be treated as a whole new site. It's just piggybacking the name from the main site.

      Yes, I agree

      We've done it with our site siloplugin.com - got the main site, and 3 sub-domains for the demo sites of the 3 products we sell

      Had no problems at all - unlike using directories - which can cause various problems if you use different themes in the directory installations

    Hi Tony, the one thing I would advise, which should already be obvious, is to make sure the directories are separated and that you create another database.

    For my directory structure, I create a "subs" folder that holds all my subdomain folders in them. I keep it all in one directory so nothing will "accidentally" be overwritten.

    For example:

    public_html <== main wordpress root
    public_html/subs/newsubdomain.com <== subdomain folder created under a "subs" folder.

    * also, as a side note, don't forget to create an index.html so people won't see an empty directory and as a security measure.

    Hope this helps,
    Artemis
