Avoid Dedicated server hosting

I wish someone had told me this before I got into this whole mess thinking a dedicated server will give me the mobility that I need.

Bottom line is, unless your site is build with custom php it will get hacked.

Wordpress, Joomla are very hackable no matter if you took measures to protect yourself

My sites got hacked and my ranking dropped. I'm still trying to estimate the extent to which google has panelized me. Basically like 4 of my websites have malware. If anybody can shed some light on what being reported by google as "spammy" due to malware attacks does to you, it would be great...

Only a few weeks ago did I pay a freelancer to remove malware from another attack, I then installed a wordpress firewall .. "Trying not to laugh" that I thought was gonna protect me.

So basically when you get a dedicated server, you get no protection at all.. and you're responsible for monitoring your security and your files unlike with the cheaper and standard option called "shared hosting".
Then if you want security for your dedicated server you need to sign up with "Sitelock", which will protect you with a cost of 200$ / website.. yearly..

Bottom line is that, dedicated servers can mess up your ranking due to the almost guaranteed hacker attacks you will get. So watch out!

    Damn that sucks! If your using wordpress look into managed hosting. I have a vps and get daily malware scans and if my site gets hacked my host cleans it up for free.

    I wouldn't blame that on a "dedicated" server - you purchased a self managed server, meaning you manage it.

    On the SiteLock - that, in no way shape or form will make anything more secure. All it does is scan your website.

    If you installed Wordpress plugins, firewalls etc, what about the server itself? I'd suggest a managed server next time that is properly secured by a professional.

    Kingfish85 is correct. You can have dedicated servers that are managed but allow you shell and root access to the server and you don't have to share the server resources. If your site got hacked it's not the servers fault. It's how the server is set up and how secure you made your installation.

    Sorry to hear that but, it seems you didn't set up the dedicated server in the right way and that's why it got hacked. Dedicated servers is the best thing you can get for your website, so don't be too pesimistic about it.

    Maybe you have file / DB backups before the websites were infected? Wiping out the server and reinstalling the websites would help..

    Next time just hire a server admin to set it up for you properly.

    Hey bud, as others stated, if you get a dedicated server make sure you know 100% how to manage it, or buy a managed dedicated. Now onto the hack.
    If you need help clearing and cleaning let me know, if it is simple I wont charge you if it takes time then I will talk to you first before doing any work. Good luck.

      I was looking into a dedicated server, but I had very little knowledge on setting one up, and at this time, I didn't have the time to learn. My websites and especially my client's websites are very important to me and my business, so I went with a VPS (Virtual Private Server). It's like having a dedicated server but at a lower cost.     Nowadays it's really hard to maintain specially if you are not more familiar of managing the Dedicated server. Yes, hosting your site into a shared hosting a less hassle because the server is being maintain by the company but we can't avoid not to use Dedicated server specially when our data and traffic is getting bigger...the only solution is study on how to manage the Dedicated server ..the whole thing most importantly the security.

    hmm this has got me in two minds as I was thinking to get a dedicated server. Sounds like VPS is easier to manage and cheaper.

      It's a lot easier to manage, less expensive and gives you lots of control. Unless you know what your doing, this is the route I'd suggest.

    Nothing wrong with getting a dedicated server, as it can offer you greater resources, more power and usually no risk that some one else on a hosting rack will bring down your sites.

    As already stated, just make sure to get a managed dedicated server. Sucks you learned the hard way
