Selling themes by offering free verion?

I am thinking of creating wordpress themes for free and submit on Wordpress.org and then adding a link to premium version in documentation, footer etc with added features.

A few questions which come in my mind are:-
1) - Does it work as good compared to selling on marketplace directly?
2) What is the conversion rate?

I am just a beginner in selling themes and need some help with the strategy.

    I don't know what the conversion rate is but generally speaking, if the free version kicks butt then you'll have no problems getting people to upgrade to a pro version. JoomlaShack did that for some of their templates and offered more options/color themes and I know it did well since i was so impressed with the free template I bought the full versions myself.
