What's the difference?

Hello website warriors,

I have just purchased my domain name and have it hosted at hostgator, this website will be for my offline business as a painting contractor. All the warriors love wordpress, they emphasize that its very search engine friendly. I am a newbie at this, and would have to outsource this. Hostgator has an extremely easy website builder that I can handle on my own. If you do your seo right, does truly designing it on wordpress make a difference then using a website builder like the one from Hostgator. If they are both the same design, will google prefer the wordpress based one?

Once I have done this for my offline business, I can start with the online. One idea I have would involve the design of a website that works like a mindmap. Anyone have experience with something like this? I have tried to research this, but keep coming up with mind map software. I want a working website, but with the bubbles like on a mind map. They would keep branching out like the wonder wheel feature on google. Any ideas on where I can go?

Thanks in advance for your help on this.

I haven't used the website builder from Hostgator, but typically a website builder will by it's nature be fairly restrictive. If you want flexibility as you go forward, Wordpress fill fit you better.

For an online mindmap, try Mind42, which is a free online mind mapping service that will provide you with code to embed your map into a website. Check it out here: Mind42.com - Collaborative mind mapping in your browser

I would suggest that you have both, the website will act as front store for your painting customers, then use the blog to act in new content or tips on painting.

The blog will be able to capture traffic that your website is not able, thus directing them back to the website or the form web page, where you will contact them for appointment for viewing of house.

      Hope it helps you.

I agree with Joshua on this one.

This is what I actually recommend to my clients when they ask for consultation from me -- this works especially well when you already have a pre-existing website/ecommerce store.

However, since you're starting from scratch, why don't you just learn and use Wordpress altogether? Wordpress allows you to expand later on, if needed, and there's a lot of stuff you could do with it (along with plugins that are always contributed to the software to give you more features). The problem I have with those site-builder or build-your-own-site programs is that they don't allow you to expand. You are limited in what you can do, and if you want to transfer later on, it's not really easy (sometimes not possible) to transfer the site. I don't know what storebuilder hostgator uses, but the above applies pretty much to a lot of sitebuilders out there.
