Exit Intent PopUp vs Normal PopUp, which one converts better for you?

I don't really get the hype about exit intent popup (most of premium optin plugins for Wordpress have this feature). They say it converts better than normal popup.

It pops when visitors move their mouse to the browser's tab, right? What's so great about it? Most of the time, it pops when I'm already "done" with this website, so why bother entering my email when I'm about to close the tab?

I've tried both but normal popup with timer (pops after x seconds) gives higher conversion rate for me.

Anyone who has tried both exit intent and normal popup, which one works better for you? Does exit intent really give higher optin rate?

How long is a piece of string?

The only real answer is to test it out for yourself, and see what works best.

Personally I hate these, and as a point of principle I don't use them, so silly me is leaving money on the table by thinking about the visitor experience.

Do you want to have a pop up when your visitor is reading your content OR...

Do you want to have a pop up when they are leaving your website.

Like everything in marketing, the only way is to test them.

Also, your theory of "I'm already done" is completely wrong.

Sometimes, people leave a site because they are done with the content but if the exit intent pop is something of interest and value to them (I Hope So), then I don't see how you can see it being useless.

At the end of the day, testing is the only way to know for sure.

I’ve tried both variants with picreel and the best result got with exit intent. Maybe it’s because most of the visitors just forget to sign. And what decision did you made?
