I have been blogging with Blogger for a few years now and I have gotten used to it. But I keep hearing people recommend WordPress. I wonder though if it's worth it. I mean isn't pretty close to Blogger? (This is my first thread so I home I am doing it right, if not please let me know).

First off the people that are talking about WordPress are talking about Wordpress.org
not the .com. Blogger is owned by Google, the big G can take your site down for any reason.

I had a blogger account and thought it was hard to set up compared to the Squidoo and hubpages at the time. Google shut my adsense off and my adwords at the time so I abandoned the blogger site. The web 2.0 sites had issues so off to something else.

I hired a designer to build a simple Amazon site for me using Word Press. It was very user friendly from day one. Since that time I have worked on and owned a few WP sites. There is a lot flexibility with the different themes to chose from. With blogger you are very limited on flexibility and design..

If you switch to WP there is a learning cure like any other site builder. On the positive you own the site and can move it too any host you want. Try moving your blogger site from google. You can promote affiliate products with Word Press. Google you are limited to what you can post or sell.

You can build a basic blog, a e-commerce, business, affiliate, or other sites. You do not need to know code to get started. There is a lot of free training online to help you build a site. The install is pretty basic if you use a hosting company that provides C-panel.

This forum has a large majority of people willing to help you out if you ever need help or have a question about WP. If you want to look into Word Press look at https://wordpress.org/about/
    for more information.

This is regarding Wordpress Script which is readily available at Wordpress.org (not Wordpress.com). Most people talk about this Wordpress CMS script.
If you have a webhosting and domain name registered, then Wordpress is undoubtedly the best CMS (content management system) you can use. There are plenty of reasons:
    1. It's open source, means you can download the entire source code and play with it, fully customize the website as per your needs. With Blogger (I didn't use it for 4 years), I dont think you can do the same.
    2. There are numerous Themes and Plugins available from the Wordpress repository and various third-party providers as well. With Plugins, you can extend your website's functional aspects. For example, adding an ecommerce store, a community platform, a discussion board, paid-membership function, download manager, and lots more.
    3. It is highly optimized and very fast.
    4. The control panel of Wordpress is very simple to use.
    5. Wordpress integrates very easily with almost any third-party service provider out there - like shopping carts, payment gateways, email marketing providers, etc.

All this is about the open-source Wordpress script. I am not really aware of Wordpress.com.

It is always MUCH BETTER to host your websites from your OWN server than rely on third-party hosted service like Blogger. You will then have full freedom and no reason to worry about your site going down or blocked.

A blogging friend of mine had 3 Blogger accounts for 7 years each, and a large following. Then one day, suddenly, without warning all his blogs were taken down. All his writing was gone.

I would never trust all my writing to Big G. You should have your own website, Wordpress is better because you can own your information, and advertise to who you want.

If you are serious about your blog(s) this is a prime example of why you should have a self hosted WordPress. I'd also add that you can do pretty much anything with a WordPress site. Blogger is very limited when compared to WP.

Even I started with blogger and there is nothing wrong in it. It's easier to use when compared to self-hosted WordPress. You don't have to pay for hosting and it has less chances (rare) of getting hacked.(unless you use a weak password). That means nothing to worry about.

At the same time, the drawbacks are serious and would require your urgent attention.

    1. Google has the right to delete your blog without informing you. Whatever be the reason, you can't question them. You may lose all your posts instantly. Whereas in a self-hosted blog, you have complete control

    2. Customization is limited when compared to self-hosted WordPress

    3. Tons of SEO options, Themes, Plugins

    4. Reselling your blog is possible with self- hosted but not with blogger

    5. Sites like buy sell ads don't allow Blogspot blogs

Well! A self-hosted WordPress won't cost you much. You can purchase hosting for around $37. You can easily migrate from blogger to WordPress without losing your traffic. If you need help, I can help you out as I started with a blogspot blog 4 years ago.

I started with Blogger and Bloglines many years ago. Bloglines closed, or shutdown, but they at least sent me a warning that they were closing. It gave me time to export all of my posts. I was able to update them and use the content later on another site.

On the other hand, Blogger just shutdown many of my blogs without any notice. It's been a long time and my memory may not be that good, but I tried contacting them and never got a definitive answer. Needles to say, I lost all posts that were not backed up at that time. That's when I moved over to WP. I first started at WP.com and them installed WP on my own domain, a much better option. I was able to export the posts from the WP dot com and import it into my own WP installation. Now I'm building entire sites using the WP platform.

It may take some time to learn, but it is truly a better choice.

Blogger and Wordpress both are better at their own. The difference is that in WordPress we have a large number of themes for blogs and in blogger we have limited templates.

Both blogger.com and wordpress.com are FREE blogging platforms. Both are very good and user-friendly. But the negative side about this Free platforms is you don't have control over domain or hosting of these platforms. Your blog will lost when they stop their free services.

If you are very serious about blogging and wish to make some money from your blog, go and buy a domain, buy a hosting service, install WordPress on your domain and start blogging.

First of all, welcome to this forum.
As you say I am using blogger for many times, you must be a master in blogger. Come to the WordPrees, I think you should use WP too. It will give you a better idea.
Both platforms are best in their own features, you choose any one of them depending your knowledge and uses.

It all comes down to what you want. If you are on blogger and feel you are ok and comfortable with it, that is fine. If you are on WordPress, be it the .com or self-hosted WordPress and you are comfortable with it fine.

I don't know why people keep saying that Google might one day take down your blog, maybe if you go against their rules. Some will say Google might one day wake up and terminate the blogger program, well that is a lie because there is no day Google terminates its programs without notice

You can only compare wordpress.com and blogger, I feel they are on the same level but when you start talking about blogger and WordPress version from wordpress.org, then you will be telling the Monkey and the fish to both climb a tree.

People are absolutely right. Wordpress is much better that Blogger and there is a list of convincing reasons (already given above by Warriors). Never waste your time and energy on Blogger.

I like wordpress flatform, it has more plugins and easy to customize parts on the site for SEO.

Also it has more free themes and large community for supporting.

I'm in the minority here. I use both blogger and Worpress and overall I prefer Blogger. I like the fact that I can host on Blogger for free. When a project is new and takes time to take off or if it's something that I don't intend to make any money from I would rather host it for free.

I also don't have to worry about my site being slow or about a huge traffic spike, if I'm on Blogger. And I don't have comment spam.

I use worpress and it's OK. I like the fact that it's relatively easy to move your blog around or to make changes to the database. Wordpress gives you a lot of flexibility.

But good hosting is expensive. And you have lots of stuff to set up and configure. Then there's a lot of comment spam. All the sites I moved from Blogger to Wordpress received lots of comment spam. Of course you can use Askimet to fight it but it took me a while to figure out how to use Askimet for free. Wordpress is too complicated to use for a regular non-tech person.

    Hi,

Yes I wold say that Wordpress is better than Blogger, but it all depends on what you are wanting to accomplish with your website/blog. Blogger is a fine tuned service with very limited tools allowing you to perform only specific tasks on your website. On The other hand
WordPress is an open source software, so you can easily extend it to add new features. There are thousands of WordPress plugins allowing you to modify and extend the default feature set such as adding a store to your website, creating portfolio, themes, etc.
