I developed a calculator in excel that I have been using for a long time and I want to have a someone code it so that I can put it on a website as I know it would be extremely popular and will hopefully generate significant traffic.

Once some numbers are typed into the excel file it automatically does 147 basic calculations and presents the information for different outcomes.

As I know very little about web design I would like to make this difficult to copy if possibly? Not simply coping and pasting the code into a competitors website.

I would also like to know how to copyright this so that there will be little difficulty proving that I hold the copyright to this calculator.

Also someone would be able to make some small variations to the calculator with the range of input options so how can I copyright a few variations of the calculator yet only have one variation on my website?

Thanks for any advice.

I got some one to do a similar job for me on elance.

You will be able to find some one on there who can program a webapp from an excel spreadsheet.

You may want to design how it all looks as well, or you'll probably get a basic ugly looking web page back.

Thanks for replying TheBauer. I did a basic image in photoshop to show what I want the interface to look like with a description of what happens when the user clicks 'calculate' or 'submit' (TBD).

My main concern is about the copyright.

I hope this will drive significant traffic to my website as it solves a problem that I have seen asked hundreds of times by the end users in this industry so I want to find out how I can stop my competitors using my calculator on their website and also covering some variations that I won't use on my website but that could steal a significant part of my potential traffic.

I can see some users coming to my website possibly 50 times a month for a prolonged period to use this calculator as it is something that they will need on an ongoing basis and it will be discussed on relevant forums as a useful tool which will drive a lot of traffic and also increase my google rankings as it should also generate significant backlinks from reputable websites.

There will also be an event happening in November which will allow me to get significant publicity and I want a few things in place with this being one of things that I want first time visitors to see as it will bring them back numerous times and will allow me to get them at the right point in the customers buying cycle.

Once I put the calculator on the website it is out there and it can't be taken back so there are three issues:

    1. How to copyright the calculator that will be on my website and 3 other slight variations.

    2. Who owns the rights to the calculator - me or the developer? Do I need them to sign a contract that says I own the rights to the calculator.

    3. What are the criteria to be able to hold the copyright for an online calculator?
