Outsourcing Logo / Branding Design

Hi Guys

I have outsourced the logo design for my branding to be used on my website, FB page, email list, business cards and letterheads but the designer has asked me for the sizes I want. I have no idea as I assumed there are standard sizes for each platform. I've also asked for several different formats i.e. jpeg, png, pdf.

Should a designer know this? If not, could someone please advise what sizes I should request.

    It shouldn't be an issue.
Make sure the logo is done in vector and that you receive the source file at the end.
Source file should be a vector format such as Adobe Illustrator AI, EPS, SVG etc.

Agreed. I ask artists to give me both the AI (source for future revisions) plus a PDF, (since I personally don't have AI), because then I can zoom the PDF to any desired size, and then copy/paste into the desired file format, using IrfanView, or even, (gasp!), MS Paint.

To answer your question, no, a designer shouldn't know this. He/she couldn't possibly know all of the uses you may put a logo to. Some web platform have 'standard' sizes, some don't. Some change their standards more often than normal people change socks.

Just curious - why do you call hiring a designer 'outsourcing'? I suppose it is, since you obviously didn't do it yourself, but I got quite the chuckle out of that. Marketers do love buzzwords, eh?

I recommend to ask a designer to work on both background: black and white. It will be ensure your logo is nice for any background colours.

At first you have to give him the dimension width and height because you are embedding it on your website. After that just tell him all the other website where you want to place the logo and he will adjust the dimension.
