Im new at blogging. From what I have read a good landing page or home page design is not cluttered, it should get one main point across because you may only have 1 glance from a visitor that will either cause someone to leave or stay a bit longer and it should be visually appealing. The content has a ways to go because I'm still learning, but I intend to cover a few different areas from 'making money online', email marketing, affiliate marketing, etc. Can I get a few opinions on the appearance of the home page? If you were looking for a way to make money online either as supplemental income or your main income would this landing page spark your interest or would it lead you to contribute to the bounce rate?

    Just my 2c..

First things first - how do you expect people to find your site? Will anyone see that page at all? If so, what's the purpose?

You mention the site is a blog, if so.. why have a LP? Your visitors aren't going to be interested in your branding, they want your content.

Now.. next thing.. I'm guessing you're a little new to this industry, right? If so.. does it really make sense to start a blog about a topic you don't know about? There are millions of other MMO/IM blogs around, why start with that? Why are people going to find/read yours over someone elses?

I don't mean to be be discouraging, it's just that most people try to get started in MMO by.. well.. pretending they know about MMO (no offence). There's tons of money to be made outside this one, small niche..

Starting an MMO blog that describes your journey is, however, a completely different story

    Cheers,
    Michael

Yes I think there is a good reason to start now. I have seen these other big name blogs/sites and you get to see them already established and that leaves a lot of unanswered questions for new people. The point of starting now at such an early stage, in my mind, is to let people see that you don't have to be an expert right out of the gates, you have to have a good attitude and dedication to learning your trade and you can get somewhere. It is more geared to ppl at my level since I can't very well educate more experienced ppl but I can help people who are at or below my level. The longer I go the more I will have to share. I'm not pretending to know anything I don't know I am very open and honest about my experience and my intent. Also I will never try and sell the notion that you can get rich quick online, I do my best to express that those are unrealistic pipe dreams for most people and not to waste time on it. To this point it really is more or less describing my journey and sharing what I am learning because what else could it really be at this point? Right now I'm researching backlinks, keywords, SEO, social networks, PPC, guest blogging, etc that I will use to drive traffic when I feel there is enough content. Ty for your response Michael I will certainly keep it in mind.

I'd suggest that you go back to the drawing board and figure out your positioning. It's way too general.

It needs to speak to a very specific group of people. The content you have on the homepage is very light so not only will it probably not rank well but it won't capture the attention of anyone, since your targeting everyone, make sense?

Some examples could be: focusing on men in their 50s (too young to retire, but who have built up a savings to start their own business) or maybe new mothers (stuck at home with young children but would be interested in creating an online income).

Also the site name doesn't make sense to me, sounds more like a hosting company name to me haha. You have a long road ahead of you, good luck.

I certainly do have a long road ahead of me and ty you for your advice. I'll definitely work on more specific targeting. My thoughts on it were to actually include a wide range of people of different ages, genders because there are people from all walks of life who could benefit from making their own online business. I agree the name could be better, it was originally going to be a news aggregate site but I used the domain for this instead.

yes, these days, a landing page with a lot of information about your service / product is better to attract visitor / sale. If you can not have a whole professional site, so I think a good landing page is still enough good

But your site is blogging, I think no landing page needed

Where's the call to action? Oh cool, your website is coming soon! But why should I care and what should I do next?

First, look for the best position of your landing page that will fit on your design. Then make it visually attractive.

Yeah, Sorry About That. I took the landing page down and replaced it with the coming soon page. I was just toying around with landing pages, but I'll work more on that aspect later on after I have worked through some customer avatars.

The point of the blog is to get people interested in having their own online business. I'll be selling them my own digital products as well as affiliate products to help them get to that point.

Since I'm going to be selling some high dollar products along with lower cost items I want to be in contact with folks and so I want to get their email asap. I figured I could make a landing/squeeze page at the main url with a menu bar at the top to navigate to other areas. Most people should be coming in from search results or links in which will be going to specific pages. For the ones that come in on the front page/landing/squeeze page it will let them see exactly what the blog is about.. if someone isn't interested I don't want to waste my time on them. If they are interested they would get a nice little ebook with plenty of information that would be valuable in achieving their aspirations which would be my lead magnet.

That's why I wanted the main url to be a full page squeeze/landing page.. the opt-ins. I want to start collecting those emails from anyone interested from day one after the launch. I want to be in contact as early as possible and as long as possible. Of course there will be opportunities to opt-in on every page, not just the landing page.

But yeah, those were my thoughts for using a landing page for a blog.

Thank you for the advice Member8200 I will keep that in mind when I am re-designing the page. I was thinking I would come up with a couple different landing pages, maybe 3 or 4, that are visually appealing using color schemes and simple images that would attract, excite and/or be more likely to provoke the desired response which is that email opt-in. I would have these pages rotate so each time someone else came to the landing page they would see a different page than the person before them. I want to start split testing that right out of the gates.

To be honest, I don't see the point of this page:

it has no information about what your site is about (will be about), why should we wait, why should we come back again... Why should we even remember that your website is going live in September?

    PS
    Also remove that hostgator favicon

@ seven4 I don't expect anyone to remember it because I'm not promoting the site yet. I'm still putting it together and learning. If I ask someone from here to take a look I'm not asking them to look at anything that I consider anywhere close to ready for consumption.. I'm just testing ideas out at this time. And ty for reminding me about the favicon I recently looked up how to change it, but I was away from home and wasn't able to do anything about it at that time. The gator does have to go

    The first part is: HEADER
    The second is: Main Content
The last is: Call to action

In the purest sense, a landing page is any web page that a visitor can arrive at or "land" on. However, when discussing landing pages within the realm of marketing and advertising, it's more common to refer to a landing page as being a standalone web page distinct from your main website that has been designed for a single focused objective.
This means that your landing page should have no global navigation to tie it to your primary website. The main reason for this is to limit the options available to your visitors, helping to guide them toward your intended conversion goal.

Thank you Suresh! Yeah I read that somewhere recently, maybe it was your post because it seems word for word but I would reply with this... sometimes thinking out of the box is an improvement on the current standard and if it doesn't work then I can always split test that later on to find a better strategy or design. I'm not fully convinced that it would be a bad thing to have a landing page on the actual site, because the landing page will give a clear message with limited distraction like a full page ad in a newspaper would draw attention but the extra content that they would navigate to would only support the main message on the landing page. When it's ready to go I want everything there to be working in harmony towards a common goal. You might be 100% right and I may be completely wrong I still think it's worth testing. Everything has to be tested constantly some things won't work and some will.
