Wordpress related, how to fix this unattractive header I have?

Hi, I am a user of Wordpress; I think very highly of it, but I have found that it's mostly the themes that start with the word "Twenty" that look halfway good, clean, and presentable....I am using the "Twenty Fourteen" theme here...which I have seen others prefer. I have been told by others that they feel the same way that some themes are buggy, look outdated, etc.

I'm trying to figure out how I can make this header look decent. See the unattractive looking black empty space where I was hoping my finished banner would go? I have enclosed a screenshot of it so you can see how bad it appears to look.

I feel that I have tried everything in the modification department, but still that ugly space remains. When I try to install my banner it somehow goes to the very top of my site (right above the navigation bar) NOT where I wanted it....and caused all my important components like social media buttons, etc. to get pushed down. Ugh! What a mess. You should have seen me trying to get it back to the way it was before. Any suggestions, I will take them

PS..I have another website with the Twenty Fourteen theme and my homepage does NOT have this problem. It looks a lot better.

Do you want the banner to go above the "jennifersanimalsworld.com" and menu?

    Oh, okay.

I did some light digging, on your behalf, and unearthed this tutorial on YouTube. It revolves around the Twenty Fourteen theme, and if you fast forward to 35:35 in the video; you'll see that The Loop starts churning out posts right below the navigation bar: you want your banner to go between the navigation bar and the beginning of The Loop.

The Twenty Fourteen theme is kind of weird (it doesn't have a front-page.php or home.php file), but try: adding the banner via HTML between the "..get_header(); ?>" and "<div id="main-content" class="main-content">" (line 18 in Sublime Text) in index.php and playing around with an inline style that applies a float to your banner.

    Good luck!

EDIT: I forgot to mention the index.php file.
