How can I fix this permalink problem?

I decided to change couple of my category names on my new site to something more descriptive. So one category, for example, was named "water" and I changes it to "water purification". And it does now show up as "water purification on the side of my page, but, when you click on that category, it's still showing the old category name - "water" in the permalink. Why would it do that?

When you go into "categories" in the dashboard, it is showing the new categories that I created. I have also gone into each article post and unchecked them form the old category name and checked the new category name.

Also, if you go into Appearance > Menus, you can see the new category names are there too. So, why does it still show the old category name in the permalink of that category? It makes no sense - am I missing something?

After switching my post from "water" to "water purification", I deleted the category "water" to see if it would fix the problem. But, instead it created another problem - when you click on "water purification" category on the side of my page, it now takes you to a 404 -file not found page.

Go into Posts > Categpories > Quick Edit option > Select category > Click Update Category > then Click Update Category again.

If that does not work, then this probably will:

    -----START-----

This won't make sense why this might work, but, it does usually work.

go into WordPress and go into Settings > Permalinks > Select "Custom Structure" > click Save changes > then select "Custom Structure" again > Click "Save Changes" button again.

    Log Out

    Clear Your Cookies

    Close Browser

Open Your Site back up and the categories should be changed.

    -------END-------

Thanks. It fixed my problem. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong. Wordpress always seems so screwy - having to delete cache constantly. I have a plugin called WP-Super Cache and my hosting provider (Hostgator) told me I need to go into that plug in after every change I make and clear the cache. Makes me wonder why they call it Super Cache if you have to delete it each time you make a change.

    what do you do?
What do you mean what do I do?

If you mean how do I use WP Super Cache? I just go to Settings > WP Super Cache and hit the delete cache button after each change that I make.

If you mean what do I do with my website, I am doing affiliate marketing. A niche website (survival niche), with a newsletter where I plan on promoting digital products.

  • Another way to fix a permalink problem like this is go to settings>permalinks and change your permalink to something else and save and then change it back to what you had it as and save. That refreshes the database and should fix the problem.
