In terms of wanting to capture a larger audience can a mobile app simply behave like a mobile site? For example user dl's the app, open it and it takes them to the mobile site?

    Technically that can be done, but why would you want that? Just build a mobile friendly website then. Don't believe the 'an app is necessary in this day and age'. It doesn't. It depends on which niche and what kind of business model the company has.. On the other hand, a mobile friendly website is important.

    Google recommends a responsive site vrs a mobile app just to get your site. Mobile app is great if it provides some other functionality other than viewing your site, like account management or something.
