How can I host long videos directly on my WP site?

Hi, I wanted to start a new website that requires paid access to certain parts of the site. Apparently there is a Wordpress plugin for that.

Anyway, I wanted to host training videos in the private paid membership area. Problem is, I have other Wordpress sites and it doesn't allow me to upload videos longer than a few minutes. So if I got ten 20 minute videos how can I host them directly on this new site?

Do some themes allow longer vides to be hosted directly on a blog? Sorry not an expert an WP.

I am guessing that the issue is a php limit. If you upload through ftp you won't be limited as to upload size. However don't expect to run this on shared hosting. You will need to optimize the videos so they are relatively small in terms of megabytes and then run your site on a dedicated server or a fast VPS. I really think you would be better serving them from an Amazon S3 or a paid Vimeo account.

Just a heads up, If you have shared hosting & you upload a bunch of videos to that same host account, once traffic starts watching all the videos the host will probably shut you down and/or force you to upgrade to a higher bandwidth hosting account.

I'd also recommend hosting them elsewhere privately, like youtube, vimeo, etc..

It's not worth the hassle and the bandwidth cost to have the videos play directly from the server.

  • Unless you have a dedicated server, it is probably best to get an Amazon S3 account to host your videos and stream to your site. You don't want videos buffering all the time

You should absolutely host them somewhere other than your server, or at least have a dedicated server for just your videos.

If you're intent on uploading videos to your site still (which I absolutely don't recommend unless you have a dedicated server), use an FTP program like Filezilla, and upload them directly to your wp-content\uploads\2015\mm folder - This way you're not uploading through the WordPress CMS and there is no limit to the length/file size other than what your host provider gives you.

Hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to pm me.

    Best,
    Will

  • Shared hosting will cause serious buffering problems for your viewers. You can host them privately on YouTube, but can display them to members on your site while they will not be accessible on youtube at all. Amazon S3 is another option as well.

Up load the videos to u tube and make them private use only in other words no one can see them but you

Then embed an iframe code into your text view of the page and it will play your videos easily
What ever you do do not upload your videos to your own server it will crash your site as there will not be enough bandwidth

Hey when you do this do the users still have control over the video i.e full screen etc?

How do you know that? The poster has not even mentioned what hosting they are using.

Use 3rd party server to upload the videos and then use html 5 video tag.

You host your video's from Youtube, then you have all the ads from youtunbe on "your" video's. Unless you want to help make G more money? Bad idea using Youtube. Don't understand why so many people are recommending it. Bad advice.

There is an upload limit with wordpress, but you don't need to upload them through wordpress. Simply upload the video's with an FTP program, then you use a good video plugin (JWplayer is one), and you set up with video's by adding the link to the video. Very easy. That's how I do it.

Or as already mentioned, host them on an Amazon S3 account.

As for a membership, S2member is a great membership plugin for wordpress. Free version does a lot. Even more than some paid solutions.
