    On April 21st, 2015 Google drastically shifted search engine rankings to favor sites that are optimized for mobile devices.Google themselves said: "This change will affect mobile searches worldwide and will have a significant impact in Google Search results."

    So anyone caring about SEO cares about responsive design.

      Well, more accurately, it's more like if any cares about mobile visitors would care about responsive design. SEO plays a role in Google's mobile search engine only. But if other search engines are marking sites as "mobile friendly," they sure have been quiet about it.

    As everyone said 60% traffic come from mobile. Further screen size of the devices changes every now & then as new mobiles / tablets launches. Using responsive with fluid design is the ideal approach for such ever changing screen sizes.
