Hello, I am hopin someone here can answer this question as I've been curious for awhile now... Many courses teach to use FTP like FileZilla to transfer files to your website, and that is how I learned at first, but then I found out I can just upload files from my CPANEL and it seems to be easier to me... So I am wondering are there some disadvantages to doing this way? Or is it just a matter of preference? thanks any help appreciated

I use both but I use ftp when moving a lot of files or when I can't connect to a CPanel.

cPanel can compress multiple folders/files into a .ZIP archive for convenient backup to your local machine, and also extract the contents of an uploaded .ZIP file to restore such a backup.

cPanel can download a backup of a MySQL database with a few mouse clicks, and also restore such a backup very conveniently.

Aside from these, cPanel has a multitude of other functions that FileZilla does not contemplate.

I have not done extensive comparisons, but FileZilla seems to be faster at moving large amounts of data up or down.

  • Using both comes in handy however if you master cpanel, you can upload zip files and unzip the quickly. This is a way faster solution for transferring files than FTP

FTP is like a native android/ios app. Using cpanel is like visiting a website from your Smartphone through a browser. Can you visit the website? Yes,sure. But with the app, it is just better.

Cpanel has more features compared to FTP, Some hosting companies like DigitalOcean that run in the cloud do not come with Cpanel installed by default so FTP will be useful.

It is better to have the experience of both, there might come a time when you want to hire a developer to work on one of your sites, with permissions you can configure an FTP account to be used for a single folder so the developer cannot access all your sites (If you have many).

For me, it's CPanel if I'm moving a lot of files. Like let's say I'm moving the wp-content folder of WordPress to a new installation. In that case I'm going to zip the folder, upload the zip via either FTP or CPanel, and then unzip it in CPanel. FTP is slow uploading lots of individual files because it has to make requests to the server for each and every one.

But if I want to upload an image or quickly edit a file, it's FTP every time, since it's faster for me.

I say get comfortable with them both.

    1. The file manager in cPanel isn't what you want to be using to upload files. It will take you FOREVER. The FTP would be the way to go for uploading files, cPanel would be used for managing everything else.
    2. Filezilla is files download/upload only, CPanel can do much more than that.
    3. FizeZilla is FTP software where you can upload things such as files html, php, images etc
cPanel is control panel of your web site where you can manage databases, emails, domains, cPanel also offer file manager but its web based so it will never compare as FTP software

Finally, I can say that You can do many things in cPanel that you cannot in FileZilla, such as creating FTP accounts, adding eMail accounts, accessing phpMyAdmin, etc. Likewise, you'd want to use FileZilla for uploading files to your server. cPanel has a web-based file manager, but in my experience it's much slower than using a normal FTP client. Thanks

    Both have their own importance.

Imagine you have too many files to upload or your browser(s) go corrupt..
What would you do then? Of course FTP

Cpanel is better than FTP; you can compress/extract/move/edit/rename/..... everything that you use on FTP and more.

I don't agree that using Cpanel will take you forever to upload files... It just depends on how you do it. If you zip the folder up. You can upload the .zip file and then extract the files in Cpanel then delete the .zip folder.

There can be only one disadvantage with cpanel as it can limit the size of zipped file to upload while Filezilla files are uploaded one by one or in a queue so no matter how big is the site, you can move it.
