Web design certifications. Are they worth it?

I am new to web design. Is it worthwhile to get HTML certification or other web design certifications? Is a portfolio of our work more important?

    i wont suggest that you go for certification...
    when you say job... as in real life job? or a part time job as a freelance in internet environment ?

    They won't hurt but may not help much. A portfolio will serve you a lot better. Nobody will hire you based on certifications alone.

    To be honest: You don´t need it. If you are doing a good work and showing your past works to potential clients, they will hire you. No one cares of you have a certification or not (atleast my clients never asked my anything about that). So just skip these kind of stuff and focus on building a great portfolio.

    I agree with everyone else. I think a portfolio is the way to go. People will feel a lot more comfortable with someone that has experience rather then a piece of paper.

    Depends on a certification. If you're thinking of those silly badges on a site footer - no. If it's a real certification with courses and exams, then perhaps.

    It depends on who wants the certification. ExpertRating certifies a bunch of skills online for employers like FOX News, UPS, L'Oreal, UC Davis (a 'teaching' hospital) and more: Employment Testing, Employee Testing by ExpertRating. 800 Tests.

    It's where I got several of my certs, but they offer training too. You can even try some free tests at ExpertRating - Online Certification and Employment Testing and display their badge on your site portfolio if you pass any of them.
