So, tell me a little more about how it works?

Why wouldn't someone use the framework, create a new theme, name it and save it into a zip file so that it can simply be uploaded in your WP admin panel the same way any other theme is done?

    The simplest answer is that by using a child theme you refrain from editing anything in the parent theme. You preserve it as is. This makes it very easy to apply pinpoint changes ("surgical" if you will), experiment with them, and revert to the original if you want to.

    If you were to copy the parent theme and start editing it, you'd soon be in a state where you don't know what you've changed and what you haven't. If anything goes wrong, it would be hard to revert just your latest changes.

    But rather than trying to answer fully, I'll suggest strongly that you read everything listed under Recommended Reading here - Theme Frameworks WordPress Codex. It'll give you a great start.
