Consolidating Websites

I am finally getting ready to consolidate my old website to a new site with new domain. It is important to not lose any SEO or backlinks from the old site. But I have some questions.

1. The new site is on Godaddy but I may move it to a faster host but that is for a different day. Both domains are through Godaddy but the old one is hosted somewhere else. I did a test forward on entire domain (301) but if you enter a specific page it forwards to the new domain but with a 404 error. So I assume the 301 redirect only works clean if it is domain to domain. Any individual page will trigger a 404 error.

2. If #1 is true how can I redirect specific pages to the similar page on the new website? Someone said via htaccess but wouldn't I need to set up hosting on the old site in order to do that? Keeping it at the current vendor is not an option.

So in a nutshell I would like to redirect specific pages to specific pages but also have a global redirect and not generate a 404 error. I would also like to not need to pay for hosting just to achieve this if possible. If done this way I will not lose any SEO that was built up correct?

just get hosting that doesn't charge for additional domains and host the domain you want the redirects on. these days if you are getting charged per domain for hosting you are probably being ripped... if it is unclear how many domains you can host on an account ask the host before signing up with them.

You'll lose all backlinks when you move to new domain, you can move contents, page title and meta descriptions to new domain.

Why would you lose the backlinks if you are redirecting them? I thought the whole concept of the permanent redirect was to preserve the link juice.

You can check with any authentic tool. Backlinks are for any specific domain name, if you redirect your domain to another domain, these backlinks may not be valid.

        Good luck
