Is my Website Design Out-Dated?

I've recently created a website at followtwitter.net but I've had a few comments that it needs to be upgraded to web 2.0! I just need your opinions on the matter, does the layout need to be completely changed? I'm getting a new logo, so don't comment on that.

Thanks for your ideas.

You know a company? That just happens to be the same as your Username? What an amazing coincidence -

Yes it needs a redesign but since you already have a new logo coming it might be best to see that first before making design suggestions.

That's going to be my new logo (maybe with a few alterations). I don't need design offers guys, I think I'm going to do it by myself - unless you offer free services of course!

In my view it's not bad. The only thing that makes it look clunky is the huge Adsense skyscraper on the right. If you must have Adsense, make it less obtrusive. I would go to a one-column layout with maybe horizontal Adsense at the very top or very bottom.

A design tweak that would give it a more modern look would be slightly rounded corners plus shadowing for the frames around the main page elements.

I enjoyed your comments and the diplomacy (as in the truth finessed) thrown in. I was actually wondering about 'adcents' (just my experience) and have been putting it in the most obtrusive and obnoxious place possible. I'll pm you an example if you don't mind, just slam it in the can if you are busy.

Someone commented a couple of threads ago that he doesn't think most visitors even know what adsense is, they seem to think it takes them to another part of the site. Do you think that a high percentage of people are turned off by pages with about as much adsense as they can hold? That a lot of people share your view?

Just wondering, but it might have a practical application.

        best wishes, lloyd

Much better. I'd go with Steve's suggestions and also punch up the login box. Free services? Of course - For charities.

I made one of these threads a month or so back and had many comments saying I needed a more web 2.0 design with rounded corners. Originally I ignored it, but the past few days I thought I may aswell put the extra effort in. I hope it's paid off!

    followtwitter.net

Don't feel you have to comment just on the layout, try the functionality of the website aswell!

    Thanks,
    Sam.

Hi, Sam. Sorry, I haven't tried the functionality.

But I will say that I think the new layout is a major improvement. Very clean and refined. Easy to understand. Great job!

No worries about the functionality. It's the design I really want nit-picked at! I really appreciate your comment, thanks!

Much better!. Th e font seems a bit small for Web 2.0. If you could tighten up the text (less) and increase the font slightly I think you would be almost there

    Sam Designs,

I like everything what is natural, nature is 3D. So I suggest you to bring in 3 dimensional look of layout. It means put lights and shadows, bevel and emboss, transparency and opacity and of course contrast. Contrast attracts eyes. Look at my web site, it is very natural, I like my site very much because it is 3D.

That's only my vision, maybe you prefer 2D look.

No offense WebStranica. Everyone's taste is different but the design elements you suggest doen't convey a high level of professionalism in some major markets. Many years ago that used to be the style of the web. It isn't any longer which doesn't mean its bad per se but for business you might need to go in another direction.

I was trying to tell you the design on your site (linked to in your signature) needs a bit of work. If you don't agree then fine - your site. If you think I am out of this planet go ahead and start a thread askling people what they think about its design.

Now if you are not selling anything from your site and don't want to then you should put what you like on it but a common mistake of many people is putting a site they find personally appealing. Often times thats not what works for most prospective customers.

Eh, if there weren't so many "Twitter" related sites out there with eye-popping graphics and buttons I would say it's fine -- but the fact that the average tweeter has been to 10 different web 2.0 twitter sites, would lead me to say that you need an update. Even Twitter upgraded their home page - so you should probably as well

    Hey Sam,
I think you've got a great start on the site. It's just like any other type of business. It will grow and change many times over the years, especially in the fickle world of web design.

If there is one modern trend I would suggest I would think about putting a video somewhere near the top explaining the site, and it's purpose. Video is simply an outstanding way to get your message to the visitor quickly.

Three questions I ask myself about every site I build:

    1. Do I know instantly what this site is about? In other words, does the design element which first catches my eye tell me everything I need to know about the site, and how it, and it's content will affect me?

    2. OK, now that I know what the site is about, is it clean and well organized? Can I find the relevant content right away without searching for more than 3 seconds. I mean that. I give myself a short leash. If I can't find relevant content in 3 seconds, I start making changes to alter that.

    3. Would I myself pay what I'm asking for this site? IF the answer is no then I scrap it, and start from scratch if needs be.

I really like the cleanliness of the site, and think it looks great.

    God bless,
    Beau
