    you can create a list of some beautiful name then go to whois.com to check availability of the that particular name.

    if you are selling templates, you dont necessarily need a domain.. you could just pay a middle man to sell your designs, ofcourse they get a cut but atleast you get to see your competition for the category and how much they are offering the template for.
    A simple google search for example wordpress themes will show you the markets already established and many show how many of what template were sold.

    If you are offering full in house unique web design business per client.. then you need your own domain name.. and a showcase of clients ( even fake ones) in a portfolio is traditionally created.
