    I think that's a path with specyfic brush or rectangle with rounded corners. Here is tutorial with something where it's described:

      I believe the term is flat design (gradient / 3D free) and this is his own style of that.

      There is a good amount of flat design on vector stock websites if you want to take a look at how they are composed in Illustrator.
