Hosting for 100k visitors/ month?

Hosting companies have a limit on monthly bandwith transfers, in addition to limits on disk space usage. If you go over your limit on a shared hosting account a hosting company will most likely impose heavy fees in the $300-$500 range, in addition to shutting down your account.

Discuss ahead of time with a hosting company your expected monthly visitors. A vps or dedicated server can be set up with Cpanel with Fantastico - the same setup that a shared hosting account has. A vps is very easy to administer.

Get bandwith quotes from several different hosting companies - also make sure you have a good understanding of what happens if you go beyond the allowed bandwith.

Depends entirely on the amount of content and overall size of the banners. You can easily get shared hosting to cover that traffic. I don't think bandwidth will be your biggest problem. More likely the problems will come with load - How much CPU resources are being used to serve the pages. Straight HTML no problem. Wordpress with certain plugins? Potential problem. Surges of traffic rather than steady use to make up the 100,000 visitors? - another big problem.

VPS? If you are willing to pay in the $50-$80 range you can get hosts that handle everything. Not much different than a shared account.

Ok I think I get the point.

I am with hostgator at the moment, which says the bandwith is unlimited. But I'll check the fineprint concerning this issue anyway.

How about CPU with shared hosting. Even if I stay with html do you thing the website will still load with this amount of traffic. And any experience with hostgator 'cause I have read that hostgator kicks your ass when you use too much of their resources.

So can you recommend any good hosting companies?

Look into fully managed vps plans with cpanel such as these. Costs start from about $40 per month for 512MB of Ram.

Dreamhost should have exactly what you need. When you use their VPS service, they allow you to scale up system resources instantly to accommodate the extra bandwidth need. You can start out as a normal shared site (even this level performs well), then go to VPS later if you choose. 100K per month traffic is not really that much, but it will typically demand slightly more than a normal shared spot.

The best host for traffic policy and traffic spikes is uberhost.net. (Note the .net, the .com site is enough to baffle a person permanently.) They will not shut you down for a traffic spike although that is one of your options. You can upgrade, pay for the extra traffic at a really reasonable 50 cents/GB and I think there is another option or 2.

I haven't used them yet but will be at the first problem with the host I have now, which has been quite good so far. They are really communicative and have live chat business hours LA time.

I spent about 20 hours at webhostingtalk.com checking out hosts for traffic policy and they were at the top of my list, but then hostpc.com had a sale which was a bargain and they have met all my needs so far.

Yes, looking at your needs, managed vps is the best solution for you.

I've use "unlimited/unmetered" shared hosting before, but when my websites had data transfer more than 2GB/month, their server was starting to have many problems and also they asked for additional fees.

You can try 512MB managed vps with cPanel and Fantastico De Luxe for about $50/month. Although unmanaged is cheaper, don't use them unless you are familiar with linux.

After trying many vps provider (which many disapointment), I use wiredtree.com now. Their support are great and very fast and their vps is stable. Their drawback is their sign up process needs time. But I am very happy now with them

I would recommend trying out a shared host to start with (at min take a 500-800gb transfer pack). Then check load time and track transfer.
From what I found (We rent our own 2 quad core monster dedicated machines), renting out a tiny VPS normally sucks big time compared to shared as you get a lower CPU share and mem share. So I would say either a big shared hosting account or a small dedicated machine (for your needs even a pentium 4 with 1GB ram and linux would do).

I was also going to say that 100k visitors per month can use a wide range of bandwidth. If a visitor stays on the site and performs a lot of queries, like using the San Diego MLS for example, the load per visitor gets quite large. If there is limited information and photos then the bandwidth is going to be much less. A shared hosting solution can still work.

Don't go with a shared host (especially not an "unlimited" or extreme overselling one), that'd just be asking for trouble. Or go with a high quality shared host (since it's static content), one which doesn't oversell. Either way, you'd be looking at $35+ per month.

I'd suggest a fully managed VPS - so KnownHost.com or something (I use KnownHost, they are great). Get one with cPanel/WHM so the transition is easy enough (but "fully managed" is the main thing). You'll need one with at least 512 MB RAM.

Since it's a static site, 512 MB of RAM and a VPS should be enough.

Did you consider talking with Hostgator for an account upgrade? They offer dedicated, too. Just use their chat and ask them what it would take for them to move you over to a dedicated box and get it to look just like what you have now on your shared or reseller account. (CPanel, RVSkin, etc.) Just tell them you need more and see what they say. They may move you to a dedicated box for free.

I have a 200K uniques per month site on a basic hostgator account, as well as some other smaller sites, and it just flies for me.
