Wordpress and Woocommerce combination is superb. Plus it's free. There are additional plugins both free and premium.

For ease of use, I would go with Shopify.

Also, give Ecwid a shot. I consulted with them last year and they have a pretty good team in

Problem with Shopify is that it costs $29 a month.

Wordpress is free other than the cost of hosting which can be as low as $7 a month.

I would only spend the $29 per month if I had a Shopify store with a product that has been tested and determined to be a type of product that people are searching for and which converts.

You should really choose your ecommerce solution based on your requirements, there is no "best".

Certainly there are the top products that have proven good support and clean code.

If your selling a few digital products, choosing Woocommerce (Even though it's great) is way overkill. Woocommerce is wonderful but does not have a small footprint.

If your selling hard goods, maybe even some digital, even a membership Woocommerce is a good pick.

If your selling digital, maybe a membership, Easy Digital Downloads handles this really well, as does iThemes Exchange.

If you want a solution that also has many themes (WordPress) available that are turn-key ready to go integration with an ecommerce product, than Easy Digital Downloads and Woocommerce have the largest choices.

If you want more of a hands off... Than as bettersocial said, use Shopify.
Shopify by the way is a WordPress SaaS application.

    Easy Digital Downloads
    iThemes Exchange
    WooCommerce
    WP eStore

These are all well coded, well supported robust WordPress plugins. (Assuming your using WordPress).

Choose the one that fits your business needs, you can't go wrong with any of these.

I use WooCommerce, one of the most popular ecommerce platforms with no recurring monthly fees to pay. Easy to use and does everything I need and want it to do.

I would suggest you to start it with selling products on amazon, ebay etc. After growing enough, you should also create a website, no matter what kind of platform you use. It actually all depends on what you are selling. (digital product, e-goods, content etc...) There all matter.

My personal preference would be to use a well-supported, self-hosted, customisable, open-source solution such as WooCommerce which offers a wide range of free or low cost add-ons.

That will depend on the requirements of your business and the type of products or services you offer.

I think it is difficult to say what the best e-commerce platform is. Everybody wants to know it. However, each business has each case with different choice for business. It depends on many thing such as your products, your budget, your long-term goal. For example, you have a small shop. Magento is not a good choice for you. You can choose WooCommerce, Prestashop, 3dcart with low cost.

WooCommerce powers some of the largest shops on the Net. They aren't just for small shops.

I have been following this thread and gone through all suggestions. All I would like to know such a platform that is entirely free. What if I want mobile application for my store in near future? What if I can't afford hosting fee? So please come up with suggestions that cover those who are having nothing in their pocket yet want to take their business online.

My experience level is considered "noob" in this realm. That being said I found Woocommerce difficult to use. I went with shopify. Its easy to set up and the onsite SEO is done for you for the most part. BUT if I had gone WooCommerce my site would still be up since I couldnt afford 29 a month for an Ecommerce site that wasnt making a dime. Hope this helps.

With Shopify and BigCommerce, both have marketplaces where you can pick and choose both free and paid apps to add more functionality to your business.

If you choose Woocommerce, prepare for plugin conflicts once you install a couple of them.
Even if they're quite popular and from the same dev.
If you choose Magento, prepare to get screwed the second you need something custom. Magento has a lot of functions in the backend, but it also has a steep learning curve for developers, and things done by simple plugins in Woocommerce may be a nightmare in Magento.
There is no magic bullet, you must take a lot of things into account before picking a CMS.
