Can you recommend a membership plugin that can do this?

I want to build a private blog for me and a few friends on a particular topic that we're all learning about together. But, I want my friends to be able to login from the homepage without having to go to a separate page (the wp-admin page) to login. And I don't want our content getting indexed or seen by other people because it's a private blog.

So I was thinking I probably need some kind of membership plugin (I'm using wordpress). But, there's so many membership plugins out there and I don't know which one would work best for what I'm trying to do.

I'm not selling anything, and I'm not charging them to be a member, but I don't care if the membership plugin has those features as long as I can turn them off. In fact, I might do a paid membership website one of the days, I just don't need such feature for this site.

I also want the ability to not show a register link on the login form because I don't want anybody that finds there way to the site to be able to register.

I would also like to be able to add a forum as well.

And for my friends to be able to talk to each other when they're logged in at the same time, as well as leave a message for one or all of us that we can see when we're login. Would be nice if it also emailed you the message left.

Anybody know of any membership plugins that can do all of that?

This is a simple matter of the settings made in the back end of wordpress. No plugin needed to do this part.

You can select a home page, so if you choose to create a customized login page here then that will be what is seen as the home page.

When first installing Wordpress, you can choose an option for the site not to get indexed.

This would again be an edit to not show the register link. No plugin required.

So, there are 2 ways you could go about this. If you leave comments active on the actual posts then your friends can comment on the specific posts.

Your other option would require you to install a forum onto wordpress.

I'm guessing you mean in the settings where you can check to discourage search engines from indexing your site. That's the only thing I see that could help to make your site private. But, it also says that it's up to search engines to honor that request and from what I've read elsewhere they don't always pay attention to that. Some of the search engine spiders for whatever reason could over look it.

I don't seem to have any options anywhere in the settings to create a costume login page. The only way I know to do that is with a plug in. But, I guess I should have been more clear - I don't want just a login box on my homepage, I don't want anybody to even see my blog at all until they login. I was thinking my login would be on the homepage, but maybe it wouldn't be if I did it the way I want, maybe it would just redirect to the homepage upon logging in, I'm not sure.

Yeah I guess there was a place to check or uncheck "anyone can register".

Sorry I guess I didn't explain this part clear enough. While I do want them to be able to leave comments and I probably will have a forum too, I also want them to be able to communicate back and forth while logged in without having to do either of those. Without having to leave a permanent message in the comments or forum. Like if they need to tell the other something that didn't pertain to one of the blog posts or forum posts. A way for the members to communicate in real time without it saving those conversations, unless the person is logged out, then it would forward the message. I just thought there might be a chat plugin or a members plugin that would allowing instant communication between members.
